Advantages: Great scent, same great lipbalm

Disadvantages: Smells like you should eat it - don't!

Original Carmex lipbalm has been a hot product on beauty editors and make-up artists lists for as long as I can remember - I mean this in all honesty - I remember well J17 magazine used to rave about the balm pretty much every issue. Now Carmex has added a new product to their range, Carmex cherry. All the same benefits of the original balm with a cherry scent added.

The packaging is very similar to the original balm, the difference mainly being the picture of two cherries on it. It still comes in the cult classic yellow and white pot with the simple understated writing and so feels like an old friend in your make-up bag. Though it is nice when companies redevelop their products and change the packaging Carmex don't need to, if it isn't broke don't fix it as they say - and boy is that right.

Opening the lid you'll see your usual perfectly untouched yellow balm, a very natural shade that doesn't make you think of chemicals and colourings. The new scent is also pretty obviously, it still has that menthol zing to it's fragrance but it is now joined by the pleasant smell of cherries. So for those of you that like the original balm but find the smell of menthol too overpowering this is probably the best choice for you.

Application-wise this balm does everything the original balm does; it soothes dry and chapped lips, protects them from the wind and cold, and keeps them soft and moisturised. But there is a slight difference I have found with this, the original Carmex is a heavier balm that gives you a more dewy semi matt finish to the lips, whereas the new cherry version is lighter and shinier - it gives a light gloss look to lips that would be great on it's own for a night out or mixed with lipstick for a glossy let protected pout.

All in all it's the same great Carmex product, with a new juicy scent and a glossier look to the lips.

Summary: The cult product reinvented.
