Advantages: long lasting, strong, intense fragrance

Disadvantages: too powerful for daytime wear

I was introduced to Dolce & Gabbana by a friend when I decided to have a trip to the casino in Graz in February 1998, and had remembered that I'd forgotten to pack my trusty Carolina Herrera for Men. All the others were wearing assorted fragrances and I asked to borrow some off a friend, and he suggested the D&G that no-one had got on. From the first sniff this appeared to be a scent for me, and since then I have got through several bottles of it. That night it proved to be lucky, as I left the casino considerably better off than when I entered it. Naturally some of the winnings went straight on a large bottle of D&G, and there was an offer on at the time which also meant that I got a Dolce & Gabbana Parfum T-Shirt in the process for free, although I must point out that I have never bought a fragrance because of the accompanying freebies, as usually the freebie is little more than a ploy to shift a slow selling line.

The aftershave comes in a very conservative velveteen effect box in dark blue, with silver writing on it, a style that Valentino seem to have also taken a shine to. The bottle is oval and curved, looking to put it possibly a bit bluntly like a decapitated Cluedo figure. The top, which either houses a spray or is a screw fitting is in blue and silver. The fragrance has been around since 1994 and has a very strong intense spicy fragrance.

The smell is one with a tinge of lavender in it, with a citrus-spicy feel due to the lemon and orange present in it and there are supporting notes provided by the sage, cedar and tobacco that help to make it a long-lasting fragrance. A squirt in the morning seems to last well into the afternoon, although really I find the fragrance almost too overpowering, although the richness of it is something that I do adore, and I generally tend to wear it during the evening, tending to opt for Issey Miyake for Men during the day, as it is slightly lighter, although equally long wearing, although admitted all f
ragrances seem to benefit for storage out of sunlight - mine are currently stored in the door of my fridge, which does perplex some people.

Checking out www.fragrancedirect.co.uk to see what the going rate is for a bottle, I have seen that there is currently a special offer on with fully boxed 75ml EdT spray costing £18.95 (down from £30), and the 125ml EdT spray is £25-26.50 depending on whether it is boxed or not, or there is a mini bottle (5ml) for £3.95. Obviously there are good offers available in duty-free or low tax shops, and within mainland Europe you can get very good deals at various duty free perfume shops, which can often be around 25% cheaper.

Like any aftershave, you should keep it in a cool environment, and I would recommend keeping the packaging if only because keeping it in its box will stop it from going off so quickly. Although it is a relatively old fragrance, this one still turns heads and I often seem to receive compliments about smelling nice, so as well as its talismanic properties in the casino, it seems to be a fragrance that other people also don't mind the smell of.
