Advantages: Everything really

Disadvantages: Blades are a bit bulky and price

I got a surprise come through the door one morning. It was a Mach III handle and blade that had come through the door and I don’t know where it had come from! I must have applied for one on the internet as a trial or something but nevertheless I had one so I might as well have tried it out!

I tried it out and was extremely impressed. It really is the closest shave I have got from any razor that I have ever used (and I’m one of those who has loads of handles hanging around from when I have tried various razors!).

The blades themselves have 3 blades with no protector wires so it gets really close. Each blade is positioned in a different position which effectively cuts the hairs shorter with each blade. They have a strip on the bottom of the blades which sort of (how can I describe this!?) ‘lifts’ up your hair making it easier for the blades to cut them and a lubricating strip at the top of the blade which lubricates well, seals the pores after the cut and also has a blue line running through it which indicated when you need to change the blade. Genius eh! Yer, the blade is a bit bulky but what can you expect with all the features that it offers!

The handle is designed nicely and looks good aswell as being effective. The handle is metal with rubber strips and a rubber underside to give good grip (and it does this well). I have shaved with it a few times and haven’t dropped it or slipped once. The rubber actually gives more grip when wet so they have actually thought of that!! (unlike those nasty slippy wilkinson sword 3D handles!!)

The handle pivots at the end to give a better shave and also has a very nice way of attaching the blades. I must just say here that there is no chance of cutting yourself on these blades as gillette have made the packaging which the blades come in (the plastic case) effectively hide the blades and the only way you will get them out is by using the handle and attaching them
to it. The plastic case also sits nicely under the handle holder (handle holder!? Is that English!?)

So what sort of shave does it give? Well, how can I explain. You know when you are shaving that area over and over again, up and down to get a nice smooth shave. Well, this razor will do it in 2 strokes if not in one stroke so you have less chance of getting razor burn. I couldn’t get rid of the ‘grey’ look where the beard grows but I think that’s just my face! (usually is!)

How much does all this cost though? Well, this is the problem bit! It’s expensive! I think for four blades it costs around £5 (correct me if I’m wrong) and I wouldn’t know how much the handle would cost as I haven’t actually bought one. I do know that for 8 blades it costs around £8.50 which works out to £1.05 a blade. You do get a few good shaves out of one blade though. While I’m going on about the cost of blades, have you noticed that they seem to be selling all the new blades in 4’s instead of 5’s? Do they think that we won’t notice?! On saying that its very expensive, if you have a nagging girlfriend who likes a smooth boyfriends face, then surely its worth the extra cost!
