Advantages: Cheap, Part of a complete scented range, Easily available
Disadvantages: Don't work, Cheap scents, Not for steel beards
Having a beard of steel, I get through shaving products like they were tissue. I've tried them all, and usually come first to reviews in places like dooyoo to guide me. In the end, I find that most reviews of these products are written by men who have slight or thin beards. To these guys, shaving with the grain, using any variety of products, would provide a clean crisp shave. To men like me, there is nothing but sore faces and mini stubble to contend with. So here's my take on the entire Gillette range, coming from the perspective of a Steel Bearded Gent. Firstly, the Razor. Its no surprise that the Mach 3 Turbo is the current choice of many. I've tried the Wilkenson Sword Diamond series, and must admit M3 Turbo is the best thus far. So the post shave experience. This is where the Gillette After Shave Balm/Gels really show their class. Or lack of it. So any light bearded soul would find great pleasure in these After Shave Treatments. But for someone who has just gone through some pain barriers going against the grain to actually get any semblance of a shave, these products fail on three counts: 1) They offer little instant soothing. They are cool by virtue of temperature and minor ingredients, but the soreness is not really alleviated. 2) They really do have a cheap scent to them. Its not something that mixes well with any quality fragrances/eau de toillettes. 3) They are definitely not doing your skin any better than a tub of vaseline would. It is for these reasons, that I have given a thumbs down to the Gillette After Shave Balms/Gels. If you have a beard of steel, give these a pass. Good luck gents.
