I can remember as a teenager when I was first introduced to face masks. My Mum was a big cosmetics lover and had a wealth of lotions and potions in our bathroom, all of which I?d try at some point. In those days there wasn?t a lot of choice in the face mask department, it was either the Avon peel off ones which made my face soooooooooo itchy, or good old Mudd masks which dried to a brown crust making you look like a leper as they flaked off all over the floor as soon as you moved.

Fast forward twenty years or so and I still use face masks although I?m not regimented enough to pamper myself every week as I should although I do try and make an effort when I remember. My daughter and I have recently decided that we are going to set aside one evening a week to give our skins a treat so we went out in search of some face masks and other goodies this weekend. I?ve got lots of expensive face masks but as Amber is only ten years old I felt some of those may be a little wasted on her so we went out to look for some cheaper versions to get her started on her beauty regime.

I was amazed to see that Mudd face masks are still on sale when we were walking round Boots so we decided to buy some to see if the company had managed to make them dry without leaving my face feeling as if I could rip the skin off it. Mudd face packs are available in Boots either in a 75g tube costing 99p or a small sachet for 50p. The sachets are a good idea to buy at first as at least there will not be much waste if you decided that Mudd really is not for you, so we picked up a couple and headed for home.

I do have sensitive skin and over the years I?ve found products that do not make me irritate or itch so I was hoping that Mudd was going to be gentle on my poor old skin. Amber fancied the mask purely because the prospect of spreading mud over h
er face made her giggle.

That evening after dinner Amber and I decided it was time to give our faces a good seeing too and shut ourselves in the bathroom away from the sarcastic comments from the male fraternity in our household.

Each Mudd sachet holds 15ml of face pack, more than enough to spread over a moon sized face such as mine and the packaging promises that not only will Mudd cleanse my face but it will get deep into the pores and draw out any grime within, leaving pores visibly reduced in size. Not only that, it?s also supposed to prevent spots and leave the skin feeling clean, fresh and smooth. Hmm, all this from a little old sachet of gloop? Well, we?ll see.

After I?d snipped the top off the sachet I was quite surprised by the colour of the slimy stuff inside. I?m sure I remember Mudd being brown years ago, but the face mask of today is a dull, dingy grey colour, much more suitable to the clay that Mudd is supposed to be made from, and the smell is heaps better than I remember. Instead of an earthy smell that doesn?t exactly have you raving, the new Mudd smells quite like Baby Lotion and no one can resist that can they?!

Before you do anything with Mudd, you do need to dampen your skin a little and blot dry, just so there?s a bit of moistness on the face. Put some Mudd into the hand and rub it gently over the face, avoiding the eye area. Mudd is quite slimy and it?s not as thick as I remember it either, in fact it?s on the runny side of firm and is a wee bit slimy as I apply it to my face. It does feel warm as I spread it over my skin though, a point in its favour as at least I still feel relaxed instead of being shocked out of my reverie by a cold dollop of gunge. The mask takes quite a while to dry on my skin until I begin to wonder whether it?s going to stay wet and gloopy for the duratio
n of my pampering. I suppose it takes a good three to four minutes before the tightening effect starts, but when it does the mask seems to dry instantly to a dry light grey covering, a bit like cement! My skin does feel a little itchy so after ten minutes I proceed to wash it off with a damp cloth. Ok, here?s the moan. Mudd is not an easy mask to remove, in fact it?s a bit of a pain. Although I followed the instructions to the letter, the mask had dried until it felt stuck on my face and it did take a bit of rubbing to remove all the traces of the clay. It is a tiny bit gritty so there?s a bit of a scratchy feeling as I rub it off. Afterwards my face feels really dry and tight but the strange thing is with Mudd, that tight feeling does wear off and just as I think I?m going to have to make a dash upstairs and slather myself in moisturiser, my face begins to feel smooth and less tight. Most odd but it?s another point in Mudd?s favour.

Apart from the one moan with the removal of Mudd from my face, I have no hesitation in saying that there is a big improvement to my skin. The slightly enlarged pores I had on my cheeks have almost disappeared and my skin feels fresh and re-vitalised with no trace of itchiness or inflammation. Even the men of the house noticed a difference and my husband has to agree that my skin feels really smooth and looks good and that?s without putting a load of moisturiser on it after my Mudd treatment.

Mudd doesn?t look nice, but the smell is really nice and for a little sachet that is hardly going to break the bank, my skin feels as if I?ve spent a fortune on a beauty preparation. Amber and I will definitely be buying these in the future for our pampering nights and who knows, after a few applications of Mudd I might even look like a teenager again.
