Advantages: Clean skin, fewer spots

Disadvantages: The face mask hurts!

Normally I don’t use Neutrogena but when I was hunting for a facial wash last week I wanted to try something new. The orange and grey tube caught my attention mainly because of the colours rather than the brand. As it was fairly cheap at £4.49 for 150 ml I decided to give it a go.

The cream is white with a light, pleasant fragrance and it goes on smoothly although it is also pretty difficult to wash off. The idea is that this can be used either as a daily wash and/or as a face mask. If you wish to use it as a facial wash just use it as you would with your normal face wash. Wash your face with the cleanser mixed with some water so that it foams. Massage onto your face and simply rinse with water but always be careful not to get any into your eyes as it’s painful!

If you want to use it as a face mask simply smooth a thin layer over your face and leave for 5 – 10 minutes. Again, it is important to avoid the eye are as the skin here is very delicate, and so are your eyes! Wash it off with water and remove any traces with some cotton wool. The face mask can be used weekly according to the instructions.

So what did I think? Personally the face wash is just a little bit too harsh for me and it is difficult to wash off with water. I find that I need to wipe the excess off with some cotton wool normally. However, it does leave my skin very clean albeit a little bit dry. I think that if you have greasy skin this would be beneficial as it could help dry it out a little bit. I have ended up just using this as a face wash once a day rather than twice so as not to dry my skin out unnecessarily. Another bonus is that I haven’t had any spots at all yet since I’ve been using this, although it is still early days!

I was quite eager to try the face mask so did this at the first opportunity but was sorely disappointed as it hurt! The cream felt like it was burning through my skin for some reason, so I had to wash it off after about a minute. Again, surprisingly I thought that my skin looked very clean and rosy, but I put the rosiness down to the pain I had just gone through! I don’t know if this is just because it’s a bit too harsh for my skin or if there is a certain ingredient I might be a little allergic to. As the cream actually contains menthol it is possible that this is what causes the discomfort.

In all this is not the ideal product for me but I think it might be well worth a try for those with greasy or even combination skin and those prone to spots. My advice would be to try it if it sounds like something that might work for you as I have several friends who swear by this.

Summary: A combination face wash and face mask
