Advantages: cheap, cheerful
Disadvantages: sticky, nondescript smell, just not special
Yesterday there was a disaster. Not altogether a natural disaster, but more the man-made sort. There I was, sat at my dressing table happily cleansing and toning without a care in the world. Much like any other weekday morning, I reached over for my Clarins Energising Moisturiser but then disaster struck! As I depressed the dispenser it gave out a small wet trump noise (why are trumps as funny at age 5 as age95?) and threw out the last dregs of it's luscious content. Which, as it happened, was barely enough to moisturise a flea, let alone my big old face! Houston, we have a problem! As Houston apparently ignored my cries, which is probably something to do with my dressing table being located at ground level in Sheffield as opposed to floating several hundred miles above the earth surface, I needed a solution. I contemplated sneaking into missblueeyedflatmate's room to borrow hers. However, she sleep very lightly and waking her up wouldn't be a good idea considering the amount of Stella Artois we had consumed (and worn) the night before. It was bad enough that I had to be up for work without me disturbing the rest of the house. In desperation I rooted through my dressing table drawers. There are usually crammed full of things I 'save' for such occasions and never use. Well, today I needed just such an item and with fate on my side I retrieved a sachet of Olay Touch Sensory Moisturising Cream. Triumph! One small step for missbroweyedgirl, one giant step for her workmates. (Well they didn't want to sit and look at my dry skin all day, not to mention the amount I'd have moaned about it!) Looking at the sachet, which was styled like a 2D tub of cream, I vaguely recollected the humble beginnings of it's life in my drawer. I had visited the Olay website and requested a free sample. For reference you can still do this - go to http://olay.com/uk then into the news section, then click the samples l
ink. After a small fight, such as you have with those fiddly little packets, I managed to get the sachet open. Surprisingly it didn't empty its entire contents over my hand/suit/dressing table! Feeling like it really must be my lucky day, I squeezed a little of the cream onto my finger and applied it to my face. The cream spread very well and was quite runny for a cream. The product is also available in a lotion (fluid) but I think really would be too runny. It would be dripping off your face before you could rub it in! Anyway, back to the point, you need very little of the cream to do a large area. To give you an idea I used the 3ml sachet again today and there still must be about half of it left. The product itself has a kind of nondescript moisturiser scent. I had kind of hoped it would smell of old-school pink Oil of Ulay (remember that?) but I was sadly disappointed. I can't really describe the scent any more than that as it's so faint and has no distinctive characteristics. On the plus side it may be more suited to sensitive skin. So far I was fairly with the product until it started to dry on my skin leaving it tacky to the touch. This I was particularly unimpressed with as you can image! I like a moisturiser that absorbs into the skin rather than one that leaves a filmy layer. Whilst looking at the website later on in the day I noticed that Olay claim 'Touch is very easy to apply, and is fully absorbed by the skin in moments'. I think this is quite a stretch of the truth! After getting that little rant out of the way I must say that the product works well. Taking into consideration that I have only used it twice, I didn't see (or feel) any visible results but my skin does feel adequately moisturised. Apparently the Touch range can make a dramatic difference to your skin in five days. If my sachet lasts that long I'll let you know! The product is marketed as suitable for all ski
n types, is dermatologically tested and apparently non-comedogenic. Ok I didn't know what that mean but dictionary.com have kindly pointed out to me that a comedogenic product tends to produce or aggravate acne. Touch is non-comedogenic, so therefore doesn't! As much as this product was adequate I feel it lacked that 'special' quality that I need in a moisturiser. See it doesn't have any energy or crazy vitamins and minerals. It does however have a lot of nasty sounding ingredients (see list at end) but for only £5.99 for 100ml it would be rude to expect more. In conclusion, this is a good product for its price. I'm going to stick to my Clarins, but why not apply for a sample and try Touch for yourself! For reference: Ingredients list taken from http://olay.com/uk: Aqua, Glycerin, Isohexadecane, Niacinamide, Dimethicone, Isoprophyl Isostearate, Polyacrylamide, Polymethylsilsesquioxane, Tocopheryl Acetate, Panthenol, Sucrose Polycottonseedate, C13-14 Isoparaffin, Laureth-7, Tocopherol, Dimethiconol, Cetyl Alcohol, Stearyl Alcohol, Myristyl Alcohol, Arachidyl Alcohol, Titanium Dioxide, Cetearyl Alcohol, Cetearyl Glucoside, Polyquaternium-10, PEG-100 Stearate, Ammonium Polyacrylate, Isopropanol, Sodium Acetate, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Palmitate, Sodium Stearate, Myristic Acid, Pentadecanoic Acid, Disodium EDTA, Methylparaben, Ethylparaben, Propylparaben, Benzyl Alcohol, BHT, Parfum. * Update * Day 3 and the sachet is still going strong! However, it looks like it may run out tomorrow, conveniently preventing me from testing their 5 day improvement claim. I have also noticed my skin is feeling a little dry . To be continued... * Update * Day 4 and the little sachet is empty! My skin feels considerably drier today, which leads me to refute the 5 day claims. I've managed to locate a few more samples so maybe I wont go straight back to the Clarins...;)

- 18/04/02 I read your opinion after I'd already purchased the product, and found that it does contain vitamins. The ingredient list claims: tocopherol (Vit E); panthenol (Vit B5) and Niacinamide (Vit B3). The fact that these ingredients show up at the top of the ingredient list means they are some of the main ingredients in the formula. Personally, I am really loving this product. |

- 21/01/02 Blimey, you're so good, I buy moisturisers and then forget to use them, lol. |

- 20/01/02 I've never used Clarins, but I do like some of the Olay moisturisers (never tried this one though). Well written and informative opinion. P.S. I think Stella is the biz! |
