Advantages: Clears acne

Disadvantages: Drying and irritating

As a long time sufferer of acne I have spent what feels like a life-time searching for a cure. I've lost count of the treatments or methods I have tried, be it dietary, holistic, antibiotics or over the counter products. Some of these worked for a time, but it was always only temporary, the spots returned and my face once more became a battleground.

I recently finished a course of antibiotics which had been keeping the worst of the acne at bay, I'd opted in favour of trying another medication but when I started getting almost constant migraines I realised I had to give my body a break.

Panic! For the first time in months I was going to be without any treatment, I became really stressed about what my skin was going to do and decided I needed to take drastic measures, this came in the form of purchasing the strongest over the counter acne product I could find, which is OXY 10 Benzoyl Peroxide lotion.

Now I've steered clear of BP ever since my skin had a nasty reaction to Salicylic Acid, I assumed it was too sensitive to take anything of that nature so opted for other methods of combatting the acne. I wish I hadn't!

The Packaging:

I expected this to come in a tube but it actually comes in a little white pot with a flip cap. This can make it difficult to get out as you have to squeeze it quite hard so that when it eventually does appear, it's often in too great a quantity as you only need a tiny amount.

The Product and application:

The product is a white cream with no particular scent, I expected something quite offensive smelling but thankfully it's not. Oxy 10 comes with strong warnings, it is likely to be extremely drying and often causes peeling and redness with the first few applications, the trick is to apply VERY LITTLE, just a tiny smear on the end of your finger. Once your skin has adjusted you can up the amount you use if needs be.

So you gently smooth the cream over the affected area gently until absorbed, which is extremely quickly, washing your hands thoroughly afterwards as it will bleach fabrics, and then waiting a few minutes before applying a good moisturiser. This last step is vital as, as I said before, this product is very drying!

The Results:

I saw results within 12 hours, my existing spots were drying out and there were no new ones on the way, which for me is miraculous! For the first couple of days I applied it a night and in the morning but this was too much for my skin so I took it back to once at night, sometimes only every other night depending on what my skin was doing. The trick is to understand how much or little your skin can take and then adjust your routine accordingly.

After a day my skin was drying and peeling a little, but I found if I exfoliated this helped ease the problem, after a a few days I'd begun to adjust to it and no longer have any problems. My skin is clear and the scars from my old acne are fading faster than they ever have before, my complexion is much more even.

If you've been struggling with your skin and are at your wits end then I recommend you to give this a try, the results are well worth it. But just to reiterate, less is more! This product is a spot treatment, not for smearing all over your face so be careful.

Now that I have my acne under control I'm going to try the acne.org 2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide treatment, which is less irritating and can be used all over your face as a preventative measure, as well as a spot treatment. So look out for my review in the near future!

The Price:

Oxy 10 costs £4.88 from Boots, which is a good price considering the tiny amount you need to use each day, it should last for ages.

There is nothing more effective, without a prescription, than the active ingredient in OXY 10 for treating stubborn spots and acne.

I know what you mean, I made the mistake of smearing it over most of my cheeks at first and they were flaking all over the place, my foundation looked horrible. Have you tried the acne.org products? My 2.5% BP arrived this morning which is supposed to be just as effective as 10% but without so much irritation, so I'll let you know how I get on with that.

I've used lots of different brands of Benzoyl Peroxide creams over the years for my acne, the only thing I hate is with pro longed use your skin gets SO dried out and turns pale :( The dryness really stands out when applying your make up too! I might go back to this for the spots on my neck because they're always so red and angry, but I won't be applying this stuff to my face anymore.
