Advantages: Gets rid of problen skin fast, Buy over the counter
Disadvantages: Can make skin dry and sore, Need to experiment with dosage levels at start
There are many lotions and potions on the market for the treatment of spots and acne. It is often very hard to choose between them. I think after some trial and error I have discovered the best of the over the counter remedies and this is the Oxy range. I say range as there are many products to choose from. The product that I particularly use is Oxy 10 advanced formula which comes in a small 30ml lotion bottle. There is also a less strong OXY 5. The idea is that you should start on the lowest dosage and work your way up. If you find that the lower strength formula works for you then you need not use anything stronger. Ultimately the aim is to ease the soreness of spots and the main ingredient to do this is benzoyl peroxide. Many of the creams that doctors prescribe contain this, but buying it over the counter makes it cheaper. As this is a strong ingredient they recommend that you do a skin test on your arm 48 hours before using it on your face. Using the cream is relatively easy. Firstly, you need to make sure that your skin is clean and dry. Ideally they say that you should clean your face with the OXY skin wash. Using your fingertips you then apply the creamy white lotion to your spots and affected areas, rubbing it in until it has vanished. Fair and sensitive skin types especially need to be careful when first using this product and use only a little at the start. Eventually you should be applying this to your skin twice daily. ~~~~So, how effective was it and what side effects, if any, were there??~~~ I have been using this product for a couple of years now, although my skin has almost totally cleared up now and so I only use it on the odd occasion that I actually get a spot. However, it was highly effective in the process of clearing up my skin, which involved changing my skin care routine to remove certain irritating moisturisers and using dianette, the oral contraceptive. It worked quickly and effectively thou
gh to remove spots. In my experience in a couple of days they were unnoticeable. Using Oxy 10 was not all plain sailing though. Firstly, I found that it stung a little when applying and at times I was lying in bed with my face throbbing away. I got some comfort out of this though as it made me feel like it was working and it didn’t last that long. Secondly my skin went very dry and it started peeling. They warn you about this, so it is not totally unexpected. However, it meant that wearing any foundation was impossible as it just clung on to the dry skin and looked awful. I used endless amounts of moisturiser, yet it failed to make any difference. This did go away eventually. I guess you have to make the decision over whether you want spotty or dry skin and I know which I would prefer. This costs just under £5 to buy. Yet this bottle lasted me quite a while and so I felt it was extremely good value for money.

- 13/01/02 Yes,you buy this over the counter.
I wouldn't recommend anyone using this long term as it really does dry your skin, but it is very effective. Very good if a spot appears before an important night out:O)
