Advantages: Nice gloss effect
Disadvantages: Doesn't hydrate, lips stay chapped
:: Introduction ::
I bought Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula Dark Chocolate & Cherry Lip Butter before going on holiday to Mauritius. What I wanted was a light lip butter for the summer when my lips tend to dry and become chapped due to dehydration and sun exposure. I continued using it when I came back to Europe for Christmas to hydrated and condition my dry and chapped lips.
:: The packaging ::
The packaging is fun and immediately grabs your attention, though I do think the additional packaging is a waste. This little tube has a screw-on lid and is unlikely to get damaged or spoilt.
:: Appearance and application::
The 10g tube is white and the butter is dispensed through a slanted spout, you press the tube and apply so there's no waste or spillage. The consistency of the clear gel-like substance is thick but it melts on the lips easily. The chocolate aroma with a hint of cherry is delicious and you can smell it long after you put it on.
:: Product claims ::
- Soften and soothes dry, chapped lips
- Adds a subtle gloss
:: Results ::
- Soften and soothes dry, chapped lips 1 / 5
My main gripe with the lip butter is that it isn't moisturising at all. While wearing it, my lips started to crack and even when I applied more and more often, it didn't soothe or soften them. The clear cocoa nut oil seems to sink in too quickly so all is left is the gloss that just doesn't give enough hydration.
- Adds a subtle gloss 5 / 5
The gloss effect is great. I would say, this lip butter is more like a lip gloss and because it's oil based, the gloss is even longer-lasting. It's also great as a lipstick undercoat or top coat.
:: Conclusion ::
I'm disappointed that Palmer's have made such a poor lip butter when most of their other products I've tried are excellent. If you want a nice, glossy butter that's light and isn't particularly protective there are many cheaper products out there. Despite its claims, it does nothing to chapped lips, so overall not recommended.
:: Price / where to buy ::
Available at chemists for £2.19 but at 99p a pop Vaseline would be a better buy!
