Advantages: Cheap, soft, absorbent

Disadvantages: Thin, break apart easily, cling to themselves

Sainsbury's cosmetic cotton wool pads come in packs of 100. They are 100% cotton. They come in a long thin plastic bag with a drawstring on top and a perforation at the bottom that works as a dispenser if you wish to hang them up. The packaging is somewhat different to the picture shown, it is a plain rectangle in mint green with white writing on. The only ones that seem to be available now are the 'basics' variety at £0.52 for 100 at www.sainsburys.co.uk .

These pads are fairly soft and when using to remove make-up, they did not scratch the skin at all. One pad is enough to clean eyeliner, eye shadow, and mascara all from one eye. To cleanse your entire face you need approximately 4-5 pads.

The packaging states that these pads are low fleecing making them ideal for contact lens wearers. I noticed a small amount of fluff being left on my eyelashes after cleansing, so I would take extra care if you have sensitive eyes.

Although they are reasonably absorbent, they are quite thin meaning they are not as cushioned as other alternatives - I found this to be a problem for me as I rub my face quite hard when removing cosmetics.

The most annoying thing about these pads is when removing from the bag, they often separate leaving the fluffy interior exposed. It is very difficult to remove just one, you end up taking half the packet with you and having to divide them with your thumbnail before shoving them back into the packet. They also separate when using them meaning that you need to keep realligning them to work effectively without getting fluff in your eyes.

When I bought these, there was no fair trade option. From looking on their webpage, Sainsburys have started offering a fair trade version recently. It is always positive to hear of shops making the switch, however, fair trade or not I will be looking elsewhere for my cotton pads in future - quality is just as important.

Summary: I cannot wait for them to run out!
