Advantages: Good quality. soft wipes that cleanse and tone but don't irritate my skin

Disadvantages: Not strong enough to remove all my make-up

I usually use Liz Earle cleanser to remove my make-up and cleanse and freshen my skin. Recently I decided to purchase some cleansing wipes for those evenings when I just can't be bothered to go through the full cleansing routine yet don't want to go to bed with my face still covered in gunk.

** Packaging **

Simple cleanisng facial wipes come in a pale green plastic packet of 25, with a peel-off white label on the front. This label conceals an opening from which you remove the wies one-by-one, and is resealable to prevent them drying out.

** The wipes themselves **

The package blurb promises that the product is 100% oil and alcohol free (it contains no "animal-derived" ingredients. I'm not sure whether that means it contains nothing that has been tested on animals, or whether it means it doesn't contain any animal extracts - I would hope the latter would be true of all cleasing products though!). On the front of the packet it says the wipes remove all make-up including waterproof mascara and also tone the skin, so there're no need for a separate toner.

They come out of the packet folded up; when you open them out they measure approx. 20cm by 15cm - a good size to cover the whole face. They do have a slight, fresh-smelling fragrance - this must just be the scent of the active ingredients rather than any perfume. The pack doesn't say what the wipes are made of, but the material is soft and feels like a cross betwen fabric and strong tissue - maybe some kind of cotton mix? In any case, it's not just tissue as it's not suitable for flushing down the loo, but has to be disposed of in the bin. The wipes have a little bit of give in them, which is good as they're unlikely to tear during use.

** Performance **

I find the wipes to be very plesant to use. They are just moist enough, feel cool and refreshing on my skin and I like the subtle, clean fragrance. They're not at all oily, don't leave any residue on my face and they remove most traces of make-up. The only thing that doesn't come off straight away is my waterproof mascara. Even if I rub my eyes with the wipe it still doesn't get it all off, so I have to use a bit of my Liz Earle cleanser, which defies the purpose of using the wipes in the first place!

Unfortunately I usually use waterproof mascara, so these wipes are not going to be suitable for me to use all that often, and if I'm too tired to cleanse properly I'm unlikely to remember what kind of mascara I'm wearing.

The wipes don't irritate my skin, which is marginally sensitive, so I imagine they'd be good for someone with really sensitive skin. I would definitely keep on using them if they only took off my mascara! It's a shame they don't fulfil the promise on the packet, as they're otherwise good value and good quality wipes.

Price at the time of writing (Feb 2009): £2.83 in Sainsbury's, £2.90 in Tesco and £2.00 in Asda, which is a low to average price for facial wipes.

Summary: Good for people with sensitive skin who don't wear waterproof products
