Advantages: Doesn't sting or irritate

Disadvantages: Doesn't do anything

As I am getting older and my skin is not in fantastic condition, I thought it might be time to add a toner to my skincare routine. Before, I just used cleansing wipes and moisturiser, but apparently a toner is a useful product to use as it should minimise pores and remove any last traces of make-up or cleanser.

I chose to try Simple Freshen Up Purifying Toner because I am familiar with Simple face products. I have used Simple cleansing cloths for years and always found them to work well.

The toner comes in a light green, see through bottle with a dark green, plastic, screw top. The bottle states that the toner is 100 per cent alcohol free and is pH balanced and suitable for all skin types. It is dermatologically approved and contains no colours or perfume, so it shouldn't irritate even very sensitive skin. The bottle also promises that the toner will 'refresh you skin without drying'.

The directions are also printed on the bottle, and they are simple and easy to follow. The bottle says to 'apply generously to your face and neck every morning and night using cotton wool'. Apparently the toner is best used alongside Simple Cleanser and Simple Moisturiser.

When I opened the bottle up to look inside I found that the liquid was very thin and had a texture much like water. It didn't smell of anything and was completely clear, so you could almost believe it actually was water if you didn't know any better.

When I applied the toner to my face I found it to be cool and refreshing. It didn't irritate my skin and it didn't leave it feeling dry or tight. However after using it for around two months I can say I don't notice any difference in the size of my pores, or any change in the general condition of my skin. I also found that if there was any make-up left on my face after cleansing, the toner did not remove it.

I won't be buying this again as I don't feel it had any effect on my skin. This may be because it is just too gentle. However if you do want to buy it, it is available from Asda for £2, or from other supermarkets and pharmacies for slightly more.

Summary: Not for me

I've never really seen the point of toner, and your review isn't changing my mind either! Shame you found that it did nothing, but at least it's not too expensive.
