Tesco Toner - Vitamin E

Advantages: cheap, removes all last traces of make-up

Disadvantages: smell, doesn't refine pores

As I am trying to reduce the amount of money I spend on beauty products, I have been looking to try more budget brands, which is how I came to purchase Tesco's vitamin E toner. I don't mind trying out cheap products, and in many cases I find that they are as good as the pricier ones, if not better.

The toner comes in a very plain clear bottle through which you can see the peach toner, and the label on the front matches the colour of the liquid inside. It's a cheap, basic bottle, but it's functional and that's the most important thing.

Vitamin E is well known as a product which is good for your skin. The Latin name for Vitamin E is tocopherol which translates as 'to give life' and indeed vitamin E will help retain moisture in the skin, reducing dryness and preventing fine lines. This said, it is believed to work most effectively in it's natural alcohol form, whereas this toner contains it in its acetate form which is thought to be a much less effective anti-oxidant.

You use this toner like any other. Simply apply to the skin with cotton wool and wipe over the face and neck after cleansing. The bottle promises that this will remove all last traces of cleanser and make-up and leave skin feeling fresh and toned.

You will notice that this toner has a slight smell to it. It's difficult to put my finger on what it is and whilst it's not the nicest scent ever, I wouldn't go so far as to say it was horrible, and it's subtle enough that you don't notice it once you've actually applied the toner.

Given the low price and the fact that this is a Tesco own brand product, I wasn't expecting too much from it if I'm honest. I found though, that this is fantastic when it comes to removing any last traces of make-up and cleanser. Many a time I have thought my skin was clean, only to find traces of dirt and grime coming out onto the cotton wool pad which is very impressive.

I have now started using a creamy wipe off cleanser, and I find that however hard I try to remove it all, there are almost always still traces of it left on my skin, so this is a godsend for getting rid of that.

The main problem I have with the toner is that it doesn't really tone the skin. I have enlarged pores around my nose, and this doesn't seem to do anything at all for the problem. It does however leave my skin feeling soft and unlike some toners I have used this ones feels gentle and doesn't sting at all.

A 150ml bottle of this toner costs just 70p from Tesco. Like I said, for this price I wasn't expecting very much, but it just goes to show that you don't have to pay loads to get a decent product, and I think it's great value for money.

Overall I am very pleased with this. It gets rid of the last traces of make-up and cleanser left on my skin, doesn't irritate and leaves my skin feeling soft, like I mentioned the main downside is that it doesn't refine the pores in anyway. It's easy to dismiss products just because they're cheap, but for the price I think this is really good, and would recommend giving it a try!

Summary: Good for the price
