Advantages: They are soft, cheap and smell nice

Disadvantages: See review because there are lots of them!

I always keep a pack of baby wipes in the house because I find them lovely and cooling on my face after I have got all hot and bothered in the garden. For myself I am not particularly concerned about what brand I buy and very often will purchase them from the £1 shop. Since my baby granddaughter arrived though I have only been buying Johnsons or Pampers wipes because her skin is obviously much more important than my 60 year old wrinkles.

I bought these Tesco Value wipes quite simply because I was in the supermarket, realised I needed a pack of wipes for my own use that day and hadn't got the money on me to buy the more expensive ones. The packet is VERY cheap and nasty, it has a crinkly sound because it is such thin plastic. I am not usually concerned about packaging but I like the thicker packets that the branded wipes come in because I am not very confident that this packet will keep the wipes moist as it is so thin.

The wipes themselves are thin but much softer than I thought they would be. I have to use two of these wipes for every one Johnsons wipe I would use because my nails would definitely break through the fabric of these. They have just the right amount of moisture in my opinion, but they are slightly clogged together in the packet which made me think straightaway that they will probably dry out quite quickly so I had better use them straightaway.

They have a nice scent, it doesn't put me in mind of babies like the Huggies, Pampers and Johnsons wipes but it is still quite a pleasant fragrance in its own right. I think it smells a little bit like the floral Fairy washing up liquid that is out now, the flowery smell isn't strong at all but the wipes have a nice clean scent overall.

Description over, let me tell you about the bad experience I had with these Value wipes. I have ezcema which means my skin is always very dry and cracked, the skin on my face is luckily in better condition but it also gets dry and if I use strong or poor quality products they can cause irritation and very severe flare ups which are painful and unsightly. In retrospect I do not know what possessed me to even go near these cheap wipes.

On Saturday I'd been busy tidying my plants in the garden after the recent spell of wet and cold weather, my hands were filthy and so was my face so I grabbed these wipe and took them outside to clean myself up in the sun. They cleaned my skin well and I did not have to use many to get the mud and dirt off my hands and face, they felt soft but I thought they had a funny slimy texture as I used them.

Within 15 minutes my face had gone from feeling cool and refreshed to being a little bit tacky to the touch and my skin was starting to tingle. I know the warning signs of a flare up so went inside and washed my face with the medicated liquid soup that my GP gives me and rinsed my skin with cool water. Half an hour later I was on the telephone to the doctor requesting an emergency visit because my face was literally burning. It felt like I was standing too close to a bonfire, my skin was very itchy and actually felt warm to the touch.

The upshot is that after my GP came he sent me to A&E where I was told that I had had a severe reaction to these wipes, tell me something I don't know, and would need to sit in the cubicle for the following six hours so that the doctor could monitor the damage to my skin after he gave me an injection and used steroid wash and cream. I also had to have painkillers and a cooling cream slathered on my face to help with the discomfort I was in.

I was lucky in that the treatment I was given worked quickly and stopped the burning, it also made my skin feel less like it was reacting badly to something and more normal so I went home.

Today, two days after I used these wipes, my skin still feels delicate and the flesh on my face aches to the core as if I really am recovering from a burn. My skin is awfully dry and I have a patch near my jaw where my ezcema has flared up badly leaving it sore and weepy.

I was never intending using these on my baby granddaughter because they are too cheap looking, but you know what it is like when you are caring for an active one year old. I could have easily grabbed just one wipe from this packet if it was the closest thing to hand and I shudder to think what might have happened if I had used this on her delicate skin.

To be fair to Tesco, with a 40 year history of ezcema I should have known better than to put my trust in a 45p pack of baby wipes. I have had a little relief from my condition over the last year or two thanks to a change of medication, and think I have gotten lax with beauty products as items that would have affected me badly in the past seem to be suiting me a lot better recently. I am certainly not saying that if you use these wipes on your babies bottom or face then they will end up like I did, but there has got to be something harsh in this product to have affected me like this even though gentle products still sometimes have the same effects on my skin.

I apologise for shouting, but NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS WOULD I EVER CONSIDER PUTTING THESE NEAR MY GRANDDAUGHTER. I would rather pay the extra £2 and be confident that Johnsons are going to look after her beautiful soft baby skin.

Summary: Use these on my granddaughter? Not a chance.
