Advantages: It does work

Disadvantages: It's overrated

I?m a real sucker for a bargain. Especially when it?s a cosmetic. So a few weeks ago when I stumbled across a review for the website www.directcosmetics.com I just had to explore, armed with my credit card, I ordered 5 products for the grand old total of £26. One of the things I had ordered was Yves Saint Laurent?s ?Touche Eclat.? For months, site members have been raving about this product. It?s been featured in every magazine I?ve read. All the A-List celebrities apparently swear by it. I?d always intended to buy it but as it retails around £21, I couldn?t bring myself to buy it. Yes, I spend more than that on other products such as foundation, but for what I thought was a concealer, I felt it was a bit hefty.

*** The ?Magic Wand? ***

I?ve heard Touch Eclat referred to as ?the magic wand? by one make-up artist, so let me explain a little about what this is. Touch Eclat (also sometimes known as ?Radiant Touch?) is a highlighter, rather than a concealer. Theoretically you apply it below your eyes to reflect attention from dark circles. It can of course be used on different areas of the face to brighten up your complexion, but is rather effective on the under-eye area which can be quite problematic for some women. The leaflet accompanying the stick says that it offsets the skin?s dulling tendencies by capturing and reflecting light.

*** How to Apply ***

Although you can apply this wherever takes your fancy, the suggested areas are the contours of your face. Under the eyes, down the sides of the nose and in the hollow of your chin, are particularly good areas. When you first open the shiny gold box, and slide the very slick, expensive-looking pen out, you will notice that the black top part clicks down, just like you?re using a biro. Simply click this button up to 30 times and you will notice the creamy liquid appearing at the brush nib. Me, being me, I didn?t read the instructions about how it needed to be pressed 30 times before
the cream came out. I thought mine was broken, until my friend pointed out exactly how many clicks I needed.

I?ve always been quite confused about how exactly to apply this, whether to brush it straight on to my skin, or to blend it on my fingers first. So I do either, depending on my mood. If I have no makeup on, then generally I?ll use the brush tip, but if I have foundation on, I sometimes just use my fingers in case the brush takes some of my make-up off. YSL suggest using the brush, then blending with your fingers. But each to their own.

*** The Effects ***

Skin does appear very refined, and in my case, some of my larger pores on my cheeks seem to disappear altogether. Touche Eclat leaves the skin looking smooth and bright. This product is not suitable for hiding blemishes, so I would suggest that you invest in a different product if you need full coverage. Personally I find this product does make my skin look good in person, but the best thing that I?ve noticed about it, is that in photographs I look so healthy and well-slept. I assume this must be an effect of the flash reflecting or something, but I?m very happy with it!

*** My Personal Views ***

Yes, it is a good product, and yes, I?d urge anyone to give it a try. However, I can live without it. It hasn?t made such a great impact on me personally, well not to the extreme that others love it to. I?d be much more devastated if Benefit stopped making Benetint, as that is my ?can?t live without? product.
Perhaps I?m odd. After all, so many people swear by Touche Eclat? I just don?t think it?s something that I personally need. It?s a nice product, and perhaps if I?m flush again I?ll consider buying it. I do like a much cheaper alternative just as much though- Revlon make a good copy: SkinLights. It only costs £5 and is available in various shades. Apparently there are 3 shades to Touche Eclat, but no one I know has anything other than number 1.

***
Noteworthy ***

I purchased Touche Eclat for £15 from Direct Cosmetics. It is hugely popular, and a search in any engine will provide you with a multitude of links to sites where you can buy it. Touche Eclat may be expensive, but in its defence, it does last a long time. The cream is quite thick and the tiniest amount is more effective than applying it liberally. One click of product is ample per-eye. The presentation of the product is absolutely superb- when you hold the heavy gold pen, you do feel luxurious and pampered. All in all, it is a good product. It?s just not for me, I suppose!

£20 and it made me red, blotchy and itchy - bah!! Huge thanks for the Revlon tip - still half the price of the Boots concealer I've been trying, so I'll certainly give it a go :)
