Gelert Emergency Blanket
Advantages: keeps you warm and dry
Disadvantages: designed to be used once
I'm somebody who likes to be prepared for any eventuality when it comes to motoring and so keep an emergency kit in my car at all times. As well as water, a snow shovel and first aid kit I want to know that I have the ability to keep warm if I break down in bad weather- my brother in law was one of those stranded on the motorway overnight when there was a sudden snowfall. I always have a couple of fleece blankets in my boot and I also keep a couple of emergency foil blankets too.
You have all probably seen foil blankets on the TV being used in first aid situations. They are made of some kind of insulating material which is covered in aluminium which gives them the ability to retain 90% of your body heat. Despite the blanket being 210 by 135 cm it is small and light enough to be fitted into a small plastic bag which will easily fit into a glove compartment or even a pocket.
I chose the Gelert blanket because of its large size, the Poundland foil blankets I had were tiny and would not be big enough to wrap yourself up in. The Gelert blanket is big enough to wrap around youself and be able to cover your head too. It is also waterproof so if you are left sitting at the side of the road in the rain will give you some protection against the rain. I also have a small tent made from the same material which is better for protecting you from rain and wind if stuck outdoors.
The blankets are slightly crinkly and not nice and soft against your skin but then they are designed for emergency use and not to snuggle up in bed at night. They can, of course, be doubled up or used in conjunction with any other bedding you may have.
I have used my foil blankets not in an emergency situation but sitting and reading a book outside my daughter's karate class while she is inside with the blanket around my shoulders. It does feel incredibly warm when you are using them and I am happy that they would perform well in an emergency situation.
The blankets can be reused although the coating does crack and flake off over time making them less efficient at both retaining heat and being waterproof and they cannot be washed. Given the low price of the blanket at around £2 each then they are designed to be disposable and only used once.
My Gelert emergency blankets give me peace of mind when I am in the car that I have some way of keeping warm if I should become stranded which makes them well worth the price I paid for them. The reflective material can also make you more visible to lights (ie headlights, torch if you were stranded in the wild) which makes them even more useful. It is well worth investing in the Gelert emergency blanket if you are a motorist or engage in outdoor activities as it has the potential to save a life if you get into trouble.
Summary: keep handy in case of emergency
