Gelert Emergency Blanket
Advantages: Light and easy to handle
Disadvantages: May not suit all requirements
~A useful product from Gelert~
I bought a single Gelert Emergency Blanket for use when camping and found that my super cheap purchase worked quite well when it was in use. I feel that the product is uber light and easy to carry with you when camping and it folds down in to quite a small bundle that can easily be flattened down and packed away after use if wanted. The cost of this product is quite low in my opinion, as I paid just over £1 for it at the time of purchase. After having used the product I feel the price I paid offered me good value for money, especially when comparing this item with the cost of other similar products I saw on sale at the same time.
The size of the emergency blanket is 210 cms x 135 cms which I feel makes it more than adequate for use as a wrap around blanket that keeps body warmth locked in should it be required. The silver toned material that makes up the blanket is both wind and rain proof. I primarily bought this product to use as an additional liner to sit on top of a tent ground sheet (of the type that is commonly found attached to the main body of most modern tents). I hoped the thermal properties of the product would keep the cold out and the warmth in when covered with a second loose plastic type ground sheet that was placed over the top of the Gelert blanket.
~Using the product~
In use I found that the product was easy to lay out flat ready for covering with the additional ground sheet, as it was light, simple to handle and easily flattened down to make up a nice smooth surface. Once in place the sheet worked well in my opinion, as the base area felt as though it was warmer than it would have been without the Gelert blanket in situ. The product was left in place whilst the tent was in use during a period of intense rain and poor weather and I feel it worked well to help keep the base of the tent warmer than usual.
There were no leaks of water during heavy rain when using this product with the extra ground sheet and I would recommend the use of this product to help retain heat in smaller 2 to 3 man tents, as just one sheet will near enough cover the whole of the base area in many modern style tents. In order to use the product in a similar way in a larger tent I feel you would need to buy an additional blanket or two depending on the amount of floor space you wanted to cover. I would also say that as the product is very thin it may appear quite quite flimsy, yet it proved to be strong and durable enough to stand up to a number of days use as described.
The silver colour of the blanket remains in place even after use and the product that I used did not crack or spit at all. If used as an emergency blanket this product can help retain up to 90% of a persons body heat when used to wrap around the body which can make this a very useful item to have when out camping or doing various sporting activities. The blanket also works well as described in this review. I feel that for a little over a £1 this product is a good buy as it can be easily put to good use. Due to the products compact size and light weight it is easily transported and takes up very little room in a sports bag or rucksack. The product is widely available both on line and in sports and camping shops, although sale prices do vary a little, from £1.25 up towards £2.50 or so. My rating for the product is 4 stars.
