      lightweight sleeping bag from Vango

My son often gets invited for sleepovers, usually requiring him to take a sleeping bag. We have a selection of sleeping bags but the one we tend to favour is a lightweight bag made by Vango.

The Vango ultralite 100 sleeping bag is as the name suggests a lightweight bag recommended for temperatures down to - 3 c. The outer of the bag is made from 40 denier rip stop nylon and is designed to be both soft and breathable. Weighing just 750 grams and measuring 21 x 16 cm when rolled up, the bag is both very lightweight and compact, making it an ideal choice for backpacking.

I really like the red and grey colours of this bag as not only do they look good but they don't show the dirt either! The bag is a * mummy* design meaning it tapers at the foot end. This is a good sized sleeping bag measuring 215 cm in length. The hood is adjustable via a cord closure. The internal zip has a guard that should help prevent it from getting caught in the material of the bag.

The inside of the bag has a pocket with Velcro fastening. This is really useful for keeping a p[-hone or torch making it easy and quick to find in the dark. The bag is sold as a 2 season bag, although I would want something thicker and warmer in the cooler months!

      My opinion.
      ***********
As I have indicated I really like the colours and look of this sleeping bag. I have used it a few times whilst camping and found it warm and cosy. However that was during the summer when the temperature was well above freezing. Although the manufactures say it can be used with temperatures down to - 3, I really wouldn't fancy it as the bag is quite thin.

If you intend to use any sleeping bag for more than an odd night, I would suggest you buy a cotton liner. Not only will this stop the bag getting damp, it will help keep it clean too. However this bag does wash and dry quickly.

I can't remember exactly how much I paid for the bag as I bought it several years ago. I see it is available from several retailers including Go Outdoors for just under £40.

Not really good enough for 2 seasons in the UK

My husband and I first started camping when we were younger and before we had our son, our first camping trip was to Luxemburg, Germany and Holland, we spent a lot of time buying the right lightweight gear as we were going to travel by public transport, so stuff needed to be light and also useful. Anyway my husband bought the Vango Ultra light 700 and I bought another Vango sleeping bag, which was much thicker, at which he laughed, though in hindsight I was the one laughing. We bought the bag for around £45, in blue and it is designed to be used in 1-2 seasons, mainly spring/summer, it has a temperature rating of -1 degree and a comfort rating of between +7 to + 25 degrees. The sleeping back is 225cm in length, 80cm wide and has a foot width of 50cm, so the sleeping bag essentially tapers towards the end. It also has a mummy shaped head. The full specifications of the sleeping bag are detailed below:

      * Pack Size: 32cm Long x 15cm Diameter Polair RSN outer fabric tough ripstop, hardwearing, fibre proof
      * Polair Silky inner fabric soft, perspiration wicking, comfortable washable.
      * Insulite Micro filling pedigree component insulation, guaranteed warmth.
      * Omega construction creates more heat retention and better fit.
      * Double offset construction (top layer) provides additional heat retention.
      * 4 strap compression sac further reduces the pack size.
      * 2-way YKK Autolock zip facilitates ventilation at the top and bottom of bag.
      * Insulated zip eliminates heat loss.
      * IFTH Tested provides guaranteed performance.
      * Filled cord sleeve improves comfort around chest and head.

For our first trip the sleeping bag did the trick and when we got home later in the year I went on a weekend camping trip with my friend in Dorset, in August and took the sleeping bag with me, as I thought mine would be too warm - how wrong I was. I was freezing at night and ended up sleeping in my clothes and wishing I had bought along my own sleeping bag. Overall the sleeping bag has a good few positives about it, as it is light, easy to fit back into the bag, it wears well and is easy to wash in the washing machine, plus is dries in super fast time. I found the zip tended to catch a little so had to zip it up slowly to prevent it getting caught on the sleeping bag and it also although there is a Velcro flap to cover over the zip, it tended to get stuck and the zip would be uncomfortable when sleeping.

Overall I would say that this sleeping bag is good if the weather is going to be warm, especially through the night, I know that it is a 2 season sleeping bag, but I have had others that have been better. My husband has bought an inner fleece lining for use with the bag when we camp in the UK and he is much more comfortable at night, I will however, not be using this sleeping bag again.

In conclusion I would say that the sleeping bag is fairly good value for money, it wears and washes well, is generally functional, but overall it has limited use due to the fact that it is probably best suited to only one season in the UK and maybe 2 in warmer climates.
