This is a very large slow cooker ideal for big families. Great if you have 4 or more kids and a couple of adults to feed.
This model of crock pot has an attractive heavy black crock with handles at either end. It has the advantage of being able to be used on the hob to sauté/brown your ingredients prior slow cooking. This is great when you want to avoid making extra washing up and most slow cookers don't offer this convenience. The crock has a rustic look and is also nice enough that it qualifies as oven to table ware.
The 5.7l volume is big enough to roast a whole chicken or make a seriously big stew. It could easily be too big for smaller families unless you like to cook extra to freeze. Because of the size it's easy to under fill and this can cause the temperature to get too high and you end up with dry food. Ideally a slow cooker should be half to two thirds full. There is definitely a knack to slow cooking as it is a bit of a balancing act with the water and there are many recipes and guides online that are worth reading before your first stew.
The timer of the front is a handy addition and like most crock pots there is a low and high and keep warm temperature setting.
The crock is big enough that it is a little big for easy cleaning in a sink. However the surface cleans off very easily.
I would highly recommend picking up good slow cooker recipe book as there are really surprising things you can make like breakfast casseroles and puddings.
Lovely kitchen essential. This slow cooker was purchased to make lovely winter warming meals such as stews and casseroles. Although this slow cooker is quite large and cumbersome compared to my previous purchase, I don't know what I would do without it.
The main qualities this particular slow cooker offers are the easy to clean removable pot which you can take straight to the table and eat "family" style.
As the pot is removable it can be used to saute your meat before adding the rest of your ingredients saving on washing up. The pot is also microwave safe (not that it would fit in my microwave), oven safe, hob safe and dishwasher safe. I personally wouldn't put this product in the dishwasher though as it's chips quite easily especially on the lid. You can also put the the actual pot in the fridge or freezer not that mine are big enough to accommodate the large pot.
The actually base of the slow cooker is chrome in colour with an LCD display so you can programme how long you would like it to be actively cooking for. With three heat settings of low, warm and high you can choose how long you would like the cooking process to take and when the cooker has used the allocated time set, it will automatically go to the warming facility for 30 minutes so as not to spoil your food if you are running late.
My main disappointment with this item is that after the first few uses the chrome base began to tarnish so took away some of the appearance appreciation.
The removable Crock pot can be used directly on the stovetop, in the microwave, in the oven and in the fridge or freezer / Short name: Crockpot SCV1600BS
