Morphy Richards is an electronics company that specialises in the manufacture of household appliances such as hairdryers, kettles and toasters. I know them best for the kitchen appliances that we had throughout the house while I was growing up and have always thought their products were amongst the most reasonable in price as well as very reliable.
~~ What it looks like ~~
The model is a large cooker at 6.5litres which sits on the work surface. It has a cord that extends from the base to the plus socket which is long enough to have the freedom to move the cooker around, but not so long that you could sit it on the floor or move it to the other side of the kitchen. It has non-slip feet which means it will stay in place without the worry of spillage or knocking it onto the floor (a serious worry with me, I drop everything!). The cooking pot is ceramic and is removable so once the food is cooked it can also be used for serving. The pot and is dishwasher proof as well as being very easy to clean, even after a casserole or curry. The outside is brushed stainless steel (titanium) which is easy to wipe down and it has cool touch handles. It has a toughened glass lid which is great because you can see straight through it to see the food without removing the lid and letting the heat out.
The cooker is very easy to use with just four settings; low, medium, high and off so not much chance for confusion there which is good! It is oval shaped with a capacity of 6.5litres and cooks at 330 watts. The shape means that it is ideal for cooking joints of meat as well as casseroles and all in one meals. It is also a good size for cooking a meal for a family or when entertaining a group of friends, or cooking ahead for the week so that I can refrigerate and eat the food later in the week for lunch!
A slow cooker can be left on all day safely cooking while you go about your routine. It means that you can enjoy freshly cooked, hot food when you get home from work or a day out, without being stuck in the kitchen for hours. I find that after a day at work I don't want to be cooking for an hour as I end up eating much later than I want to. At least once a week I will cook using the slow cooker and arrive home to a wonderful smell and a beautifully cooked meal with no effort at all!
~~ Cooking with the slow cooker ~~
The first time I used the slow cooker was on the 27 December for my sister's birthday so only two days after I received it! We were having 30 members of the family over for a get together and mum had made two big steak pies, a chilli and Ashleigh thought it would be nice to do a big curry. We just used 4 jars of Patak's Rogan Josh sauce (a big favourite in our family!) and chopped up a whole load of chicken fillets and left them in the slow cooker on the medium heating setting together while we were out of the house. We came back five hours later to delicious tender chicken curry.
Last week I was late leaving for work but knew I had a friend staying that evening for dinner who would be arriving at the house at the same time as me. I had bought some chicken thighs a day earlier which were in the fridge. I quickly pulled the slow cooker out of the cupboard, turned it on, threw in all the chicken, opened a can of tomatoes and threw them in with a bit of red wine. I gave it a stir and added some herbs and spices (no idea which - I was rushing!) and ran out of the door. I came back that evening to a wonderful smell and delicious chicken that fell of the bone and just served it with some mashed potato and vegetables that I had picked up from Sainsbury's ready made on the way home! It was amazing!
I've also used it for making easy and healthy stews with braising steak, potatoes and vegetables. Braising steak isn't great quality meat but once it has been cooked slowly for a few hours it tastes wonderful. A slow cooker is perfect for this kind of meat. It also doesn't require the oil that you might use for frying or roasting which means that the food is often healthier.
~~ Some tips for using a slow cooker ~~
- Don't remove the lid too often as a lot of the heat escapes
- Fill the slow cooker about a third to half full for optimum cooking
- Cut food into similar size pieces so that they cook in similar times
- Start cooking on a higher heat and reduce towards the end
- Always remove cooked food from the slow cooker and store it promptly
- Defrost food fully before using slow cooker
- When cooking has finished wash in warm water rather than cold if the bowl is still hot
~~ Price and availability ~~
From some quick online research the prices seem to vary between £25 and £40 for this model and it seems that buying online or in store is comparable in price. I've made a note of some of the prices below for information.
It is also available in a smaller 3.5litre size.
~~ Overall ~~
The best thing about the slow cooker for me is that no matter how long I leave the food, it doesn't overcoo. I am constantly burning food in the oven by forgetting all about it. It will prepare a healthy, tender and tasty meal with minimum supervision. For me this is the most important thing. Working all day means that I get home from work and am too tired to stand in the kitchen for an hour preparing a proper meal. This gives me the best of both worlds and means that I always cook lots of food which can then be heated up the next day. The only negative thing I can think of about the Morphy Richards slow cooker is that it doesn't have a timer on it. It would be great to not have to waste energy until I get home to turn it off - a timer would be great to cut off as soon as the food is cooked. Also I can imagine that for people with small kitchens it would be difficult to store such a large object and at 6.5 litres, this model is quite large.
However, for me the Morphy Richards Slow Cooker has been a bit of a lifesaver and I'm still really enjoying using it and experimenting with foods and recipes I've never used before. It's excellent value at the prices mentioned below and would recommend for anyone. 4/5.
