I have been thinking about investing in a slow cooker for some time now, everyone seemed to be talking about them at work and I knew that it would be a great benefit to our house. I do struggle sometimes, especially when getting in late from work and then thinking of what to have for tea, especially if I am trying to make it a healthy meal but a slow cooker has helped me greatly with these things. It took us some time in decided what model to get but after speaking with my mum, who has had hers for over 15 years we opted for a Morphy Richards model and here are my thoughts on my 48718 model.
As the model that my mum has had was the Morphy Richards one, we decided to go with that one, as well as knowing the brand as well through other appliances. We looked in the Argos book as well as various electrical retailers and it was actually the BHS store that we got our model from in the end. It cost us £32.99 which was around about the price that we were expecting to pay so I was pleased to have hit budget. The slow cooker was one amongst a few in the store but I was swung by the specifications and features and good price.
The product came all wrapped in a cardboard box, this was a major plus as it was the packaging that told us a lot of detail about the slow cooker and what got the sale. Once out of the packaging you will see a 2 year warrantee, a booklet that gave very accurate and easy to use instructions as well as a recipe book, I found this as a great plus as it saved me looking on the internet for ideas other than a chicken casserole to get going with! The slow cooker is made up of 3 basic parts, the slow cooker base, the removal pot where the cooking takes place and the lid.
The slow cooker, as you can see in the picture provided is a brushed chrome look that has a clear glass lid, there is just the one dial on the appliance, and this is situated on the front and allows you to set the heat temperature. The slow cooker comes with a capacity of 6.5 litres and whilst I don't fill this every time I cook, I have found it fantastic when cooking for friends and family, I can prepare my main meal early in the day and let it cook away, the capacity is really useful and a great feature for me.
The slow cooker is a 330 watt appliance and you need to just put the slow cooker on a flat surface in your kitchen and plug it in. The settings are high, medium and low and it tends to be the low for me, I put the slow cooker on before I leave the house of a morning and then when I walk back in of an evening, my tea is cooked! The low setting can cook food for duration between 6 and 12 hours, the high being between 3 and 8.
I think my main worry when using a slow cooker was that having the heat on for such a long periods of time was that it was going to dry my foods out and even though the recipes that I was following told me to add certain amounts of stock and liquids I was a little wary, now I have been using this for some time I need not have worried, the food cooks so well in this model. The meats let a lot juices out so this helps with the moisture of meals and even when I add stock, it is still there when I get home and with a good dosage of seasoning the meals taste great, on the opposite to that I was a little concerned of how small to chop foods, just so that they would not disintegrate in the dish but again, you just start to build a knowledge up of what works best.
The latest favourite in our household is slow cooking a spaghetti bolognaise in the dish and the flavour is fantastic, much better than when I was cooking the meal in a rush on the hob or even cooking for longer in the oven, all ingredients could be tasted and they still had that bite and crunch to them. As well as making specific dishes in there I have now got used to cooking joints as well, I think a beef joint tastes fantastic, no matter which setting you have the cooker on it tastes really succulent and tender and full of flavour, I really have noticed a difference in taste as well as just how good this is on your time saving.
To clean, this is very easy, as the ceramic dish lifts out you find that it can be put into the dishwasher or warm soapy water. It comes out looking like brand new again, the same as the lid really, I also just wipe the main body of the slow cooker down with a damp cloth.
In summary, as I am sure you have guessed, I have been really pleased with this product, it is efficient and effective, not just in the cooking but on my time as well. Food tastes great in it and it I am just so glad I brought it.
5 out of 5 from me
