The Russel Hobbs rice cooker and steamer is exactly what the name suggests. It's a kitchen gadget for cooking rice or steaming food. I primarily use it for cooking rice so am really reviewing from the rice cooking point of view. I have tried the steamer but rarely use the steaming function.
The rice cooker consists of a stainless steel main unit which has a removable bowl for cooking and a glass lid with a small hole in it for releasing steam. The tray for steaming sits in the bowl under the glass lid if it is being used.
The bowl is large enough for 10 cups of rice. Far more than I use, so I normally make too much and do fried rice with the leftovers the next day.
To cook rice it is best to follow the instructions on the rice packet for the amount of water as different kinds of rice vary in the amount of water they absord to cook. I'm a bit lazy and tend to pour some rice in and then add water so that it is a couple of centimeters above the rice, which tends to work.
The cooker has a big switch on the front which is pushed down to turn it on. The machine works on weight so there is nothing to adjust for different amounts of rice. A measuring cup is included, but I have never used it as guesswork has made good results.
Once the rice is cooked it automatically switches to the 'keep warm' function and the light changes from red to orange. If kept on warm for too long the rice can go a bit dry.
For steaming, you place water in the bown and whatever you want to steam in the steaming tray and activate the cooker in the same way.
The glass lid has a plastic handle in the middle which helps in removing when hot, although oven gloves are still a good idea as steam can escape from the bowl when the lid is removed.
The main attraction of a rice cooker is that I have never made bad rice with it. Every time I have used it the rice has turned out the perfect consistancy being not too dry or too sticky. Compared with cooking in a pan this is incredible and I highly recommend getting one of these.
The Russel hobbs rice cooker is well built. It is chunky which makes it feel durable and sturdy and the buttons are easy to operate.
The power cord is around a metre long which is probably a bit more than needed and as no coil is included can mean long wires are visible around the kitchen (I hide mine behind the microwave)
The rice cooker sells for £24.99 on Amazon which is fairly good value for a rice cooker. Cheaper own brand options are available but Russel Hobbs are well respected and make good quality items.
Perfect rice, good quality item and a reasonable cost...highly recommended.
