Advantages: Heat retaining, warmth
Disadvantages: Cost
Lets face it at £5000 for a new two oven Aga to do a little more than just cook, and that's exactly what it does, the Aga is a way of life. As soon as anyone enters a kitchen with an Aga they are instantly drawn to it even the pets that huddle in front of the warmth, it is also a status symbol for many. Options: The Aga comes in a two or four oven, the two oven features a roasting and a simmering oven and the four has two extra for baking and warming (the warming oven is great for ensuring all your food can be served at the same time as food can be kept warm for hours) There are about 10 different colours including clasics like racing green and blue but also lilac is available for an extra cost. There is an option of included boiler that will provide enough hot water for a small family daily, and also if you are buiding a new house a tip, you can claim the VAT back as it is classed as an essential service. you can choose natural or LPG gas, oil or electric to run the Aga. Continous Heat: The Aga is never turned off and so the heat is instantly there for cooking or boiling your kettle making it quicker and more cost effective. Cast iron: the Cast Iron retains it's heat and this means that even when cooking souffles you can open the doors as many times as you want without it sinking, also omlettes are great in the oven as they cook from all round and are verrrry fluffy. Price: Aga's start at £5000 and go up to around £10,000, however my nan in scotland still has one and she has now had it for 50 years!!! an average cooker now needs to be replaced every 8-10 years. Where Can you buy Aga's: This one is a little bit of the downside to buy a new Aga it is unlikely you will have a shop very close so you may need to travel to buy one, they will also suggest a home survey to check your property is suitable for an Aga. Servicing: an Aga does need s
ervicing twice a year by a corgi engineer for gas and this will cost different prices dependant on who you use. Website: The official website for the UK is actually www.aga-rayburn.co.uk and not as above .com address, you cannot buy from the website but you can find all the technical and other details you require including an online kitchen design programme that you can change colours and designs on. you can also request brochures and outlet information. And what if something goes wrong: a service centre is open that you can call to book engineers and speak to staff about problems or queries. also .. they are manufactured in Britain mostly by hand, how many people can say that about a product nowadays???

- 27/04/02 I always cringe when I see the broken remains of a cast iron Aga in someones back yard, the owners oblivious to just what they have actually thrown away |
