Advantages: Quick, easy,
Disadvantages: Mini, very mini
My friend got me one of these last Christmas as she knows I like baking and playing about with icing cakes.
Looking at online prices they range from £19.99-£24.99 in stores such as Argos.
(Take note Argos these are cakes not cookies lol) anyone reading previous tea set review will know what I mean.
This is very easy to use and wipes clean with a cloth as it is non stick. The maker open and closes onto itself but there is no safety catch on the handle so be extra careful if you've youngsters about. The maker has 7 spaces for the mini cupcakes and boy are they mini! was bit surprised at how small they actually are as the picture on the box doesn't look that small. When you plug it into the mains a red light appears on the top of the maker and once it has reached it's temperature the green light shows instead. Seeing as this is a mini cupcake maker you need to use smaller cake cases and my friend thoughtfully wrapped some up for me with this maker, they are petit four cases and a multi coloured pack of 100 cost around about 64p in Asda. When the maker has reached it's temperature which takes approx 5mins open it up and place the cases into it then spoon the mix into it the same way you would prepare cakes on a normal cake baking tray. When you have closed the top back down the recommended baking time is about 20 minutes but I personally found each batch takes about 12 minutes and they are perfectly cooked, remember they are only small. When you've finished using this simply unplug and allow to cool for approx 10 minutes before storing away.
I have used this several times now so don't get me wrong when I say it isn't as good as I'd like it to be. My reasoning behind this is when baking I can put 2 or more trays of 12 cakes into the oven to cook at one time and after 15 minutes they are all cooked, my issue with this maker is you put in 7 into it wait 12 ish minutes then take them out and put another 7 in and wait again, it seems to take ages to make enough for what I need. So as a novelty it is good and the mini cupcakes are perfect for mini people which is what I've used them for when had guests bringing their mini ones along too. Literally one bite of these and they are gone. The last time I used it I done a normal batch of cakes and just done 7 mini cakes and felt I was using two lots of electric while doing it this way. I could have just put the petit fours into the main oven.
On the plus size the maker does cook all the cakes nicely and evenly and spongy where as sometimes you can get edges burnt in the oven if you haven't turned the tray round or left them slightly in too long. They also are very quick to add some icing to and sprinkles if required and not many needed due to size.
So I have mentioned pros and cons of this so hopefully if you were planned on getting one I've help you decide either way. I will use this again but it doesn't get used as often as my trusty baking trays but will stay with me rather then be given away.
Summary: Easy to use, makes nice cakes.
