Advantages: Great food, fast

Disadvantages: none

Before I start, I'll admit it, this is a very sad opinion!

Of all the big things in the world to comment on - world hunger, capital punishment, joining the euro, latest happenings on Coronation Street - it seems somehow feeble to be commenting on something as ordinary as a Sandwich Maker.

But there are two reasons I feel compelled to put finger to keyboard - a) I love toasties, and b) the Breville Daisy Toasted Sandwich machine is the cutest piece of kitchen hardware available.

I also have to admit that the only reason we bought the thing was that it was in a basket by the queue for the checkouts at Argos when we were doing our Christmas shopping. After all the trapsing around the shops, queuing, and the stress of trying choose the right thing, the time had come for a comfort purchase and there it was.

In case you have seen one of these yet, a bit of description: this is a one sandwich machine capable of taking regular sized slices of bread. There's nothing very special technically, except it is coloured white with black spots, and has a cow's head for clamp to hold the lid shut. Oh, and it's called "Daisy".

Toasted sandwiches are the utimate fast food, you only need a couple of slices of ordinary (usually white) sliced bread (and that in itself is a treat as a change from the excellent "real" bread from our local bakers), your imagination with fillings and about 4 minutes of patience.

I have to admit to not being particularly adventurous with fillings. My favourites would be ham & cheese, bacon and (the best!) baked beans with cheese. In theory you could probably put healthy vegetables or something in there, but it seems wrong somehow (to me anyway).

There's little cleaning to do afterwards, although the bean sauce does tend to overflow.

Overall a fantastic machine which I'd recommend to anyone. The only possible criticism is that it might be nice to
make 2 at a time, but it's not a big deal - just eat one while the next one's cooking!
