Advantages: fast hot food, toasted cheese smells delicious
Disadvantages: useless once the non-stick coating is scratched, more clutter for the kitchen
This is my third sandwich toaster, and they get better and better. This one is easy to clean outside and inside, heats up in a few minutes (usually before I have finished preparing the fillings) and looks good on my worktop. Sandwich toasters are great things if you take a little time to prepare yourself. The bread should be medium or thick, square cut, or cut the crust off to make a square. Butter your bread (lightly) on the outside. Any spread will do, low fat is just as good as butter to make your sandwich golden brown. Prepare your fillings. Cheese toasts very well, must be grated or cut very thinly. Add a thin slice or two of onion or tomato. Cooked meats work very well, ham is especially tasty, thinly cut with a little cheese or tomato. Sweet fillings, such as sweet mincemeat, jam or mashed banana are delicious. Heat up your toaster according to the manufacturers instructions, mine has a red light for heating and a green light for "ready to cook". Place the slices of bread, butter side down, onto the hotplate, then make indentations with the back of a spoon ready for your fillings. You need only a heaped teaspoon of grated cheese per "indentation", more will just seep out and make a mess. Add the ham, tomato or onion, then top with the second slice of bread, butter side uppermost. Close the toaster slowly, keeping the bread aligned using the teaspoon if necessary. Watch your fingers! This is not like a souffle that can spoil, feel free to check on your sandwich periodically until it looks golden brown. Carefully ease the toasties out, using a non-metallic implement, do not scratch the non-stick surface. If serving to children, open the toastie up to let the heat escape, the fillings are liable to scald straight from the toaster. Clean the toaster immediately with a bunch of kitchen roll, if you let it cool the cheese sets like cement. Sweet toasties are fabulous served with ice cream or whipped cream. It'
;s best to use an unsalted butter if you have it. make sure you clean the sandwich maker thoroughly if you have a sweet filling, there is nothing nastier than jam and ham!
