Advantages: Decent design of jug, Handy filter guage

Disadvantages: Didn't seem to make any difference to the water

Susan tends to drink loads of water and has been after a Brita water filter for ages now, after a few weeks we noticed that the Brita water filter was in the sale at Argos – seeing it as being the ideal opportunity to buy one, so we did.

Firstly, the water filter is designed to sit inside the fridge door, so quite handy that way. It’s capable of holding around 2.5 litres of the stuff and is very easy to set up. Inside the jug you have a section for inserting the supplied filter. Once you’ve soaked the filter in cold water for 20 minutes you slot the filter inside the jug, fill the jug with water and whack it in the fridge.

On top of the jug is a little digital display that indicates how long is left before you need to replace your filter – a handy thing to have, as it would be quite easy to lose track about when the filter was last changed. According to the instructions filters should be replaced once a month – which is quite good really when you consider how much water the average household gets through in a day.

The whole point of the op of course is to look at the quality of the water it filters. Whilst the jug itself gets full marks for practicality (there’s even a rubber rim on the base of the jug to prevent it slipping) I’m afraid to say I was a little disappointed about the end results.

Watching adverts for it on television I was led to believe that the taste of the water would be dramatically improved, but if I’m being honest with you it tasted exactly the same as normal tap water to me – in a blindfold test I’d be very hard pressed indeed to pick which water came from the tap and which was from the filter jug.

Susan said that she expected it to taste the same, I don’t know if that’s the case or if she’s trying to convince herself that it is better. Perhaps all the metals etc. have been removed and it is healthier for us but I̵
7;m afraid I was a little disappointed, perhaps my expectations were too high.

I’ve looked at some other opinions here though and everyone else seems to think they’re the greatest. Maybe I live in an area with a slightly better water quality than others. If it were possible to try a friend’s filter out first before buying your own then I’d recommend you do – I wish we had.

Interesting op and nice title!

I have to disagree with you though - I live in a hard water area and there is a noticeable difference in the taste of the water and in how often I need to de-scale my kettle. Perhaps you are just lucky in the quality of the water where you live.

Good advice about trying a friends first though.
