Advantages: choice of bright colours, cheap, works well

Disadvantages: indicator not very clear, lid needs a slap to close

I purchased the Cookworks KK03 kettle as part of a three-item set (kettle, sandwich maker, toaster) from Argos, and paid £19.99 for the lot.

I'm really pleased with my purchase and use all three items a lot.

The kettle is 'cordless' which is very practical; it makes refilling the kettle or carrying it to the table so much easier. I would not use a corded kettle again.

The capacity of 1.7 litre is ample for a single-person household.

The kettle features 'dry boil protection' and 'auto-switch off', which I hope are basic safety features in all kettles nowadays, so they're hardly worth mentioning.

The water-level indicator is a much-needed feature for any electric kettle. Having once had a kettle without indicator, I would not consider using one again.

Unfortunately, the water level indicator on this particular kettle can be misleading. At a casual glance, it looks as if it is half full when it's empty. This is because condensation deposits beads of water on the upper half of the indicator; so that part appears 'different'. I've been mislead several times, but no longer.

Another very minor quibble is that the lid closes only if I give it a good slap on the top. I'm used to kettles whose lids need only a light tilt with one finger and they're closed. But, even if the lid is not fully closed, the kettle works fine, although it may need more energy because some of the steam escapes.

The kettle does not have any other fancy features, and, in my opinion, doesn't need any. It heats water quickly, what else would an electric kettle need?

I'm delighted with my decision to buy a set of matching items - it looks so much 'tidier' in the kitchen if they're matched. I'm equally pleased I opted for yellow, which is such a cheerful 'wake-you-up-in-the-morning' colour.

They also don't need frequent polishing as chrome items would.

I'm thinking back to my days of living in bedsits without kitchens. How useful would such a set have been! I'd have loved to be able to make not only a hot drink, but a basic hot meal (hot filled sandwich) in my room at any time of day or night.

The choice of colours (yellow, blue or green) means the set can match the decorations and not look too much like out-of-place kitchen items.

I imagine the three-item-set would be equally useful in any place where you spend some hours or days, which have electricity but no kitchen. Perhaps a garden shed or a beach hut (if equipped with eletricity).

At Argos, the set is listed as 'Cookworks triple pack yellow', and you can buy it online or in one of their stores, either for home delivery (for an extra fee) or for store pick-up.

When our kettle hits the knackers yard (which they do on a regular basis)I'll take a look at one of these. Actualy, yellow sounds rather different! Lou x
