I had wanted a deep fat fryer for ages so welcomed the idea of one as a gift from my mother and father with open arms. I do not eat much fried food so I went for a small 1 kilogramme capacity. The 1800 watt heating element sounded good enough for me!

I chose the Delonghi model, initially because it was the cheapest on the shelf. I am not into complicated dials and settings so this one was ideal with a simple one heat setting. The thermostat is set to 190 degrees centigrade.

The fryer is simply plugged in and turned on at the wall. There is a red LED light to indicate that the device is heating up. When the fryer is ready for use, the LED light goes off and a click can be heard, I guess from
the thermostat.

On the front of the fryer there is a coking time guide. It shows chips, to be cooked for 15 minutes, chicken to be cooked for 10 minutes. The picture shows a whole chicken, but pelase dont expect a whole Chicken to be cooked in ten minutes! I know, you may laugh, but some people are really that bad at cooking!!! Fish is to be cooked for 8 minutes, onions for 5 minutes and mushrooms for 4 minutes. If I were you, and from experience, I would just use your own estimation when it comes to timing the food. It is a lot safer!!

The fryer is white plastic with a metal silver inside well. As I have a young son, and I know how he likes to be into everythig, I was pleased when the fryer specified that it had a cool wall feature. Although the walls do not get particularly hot, they do get quite warm, especiallya round the area of the handles!

The oil well holds two litres of oil, maximum. It does not seem a lot in comparison to the well but whne food is added, it bubbles way up the side of the fryer. There is a minimum marker, so that you know when the oil needs topping up, usually after every use.

The fryer comes complete with a frying basket and a handle. The basket is of sufficient quality. It holds enough chips for three of us, that is myself, my boyfriend and my two year old son. It would not be big enough for a 2.4 children family! The handle is simply thick wire which can be squeezed together to slot into the side of the basket to lower into the fat and then squeezed again to remove. If you do this during cooking, you do run the risk of burning yourself. Simple and effective but not the safest handle in the world!

The box recommends that you try and shake off any excess water or ice from products, before frying. This reduces the risk of the oil spitting and also stops the oil cooling down too much!

The cord can be wound round a plastic loop arounfd the back of the fryer to be kept away tidy when not i
n use.The fryer comes fitted with a safety plug.

The lid of the fryer can be opened with the push button, clearly labelled 'OPEN'. The lid lifts smoothly and quickly. In the lid there is a filter which can be easily removed using a flip up door and cleaned, although it is very wafer like and tears easily. I was advised that replacements can be bought but they are about five pounds a time. Also in the lid, there is a small oval window, so that you can, supposedly, see you your food cooking and not have to open the lid until ready. Dont count on the window being any use! It covers in water droplets from the steam and nothing can be seen!

When it comes to cleaning the fryer, I wish I had never bought such a cheap fryer. The actual well where you pour the oil is fixed so when it comes to cleaning it, you have to tip the whole fryer up. There are handle notches to hold the fryer which are quite useful. I was attempting to pour the oil into a big glass bowl so that I could discard of it later. The cavity of the fryer is about half an inch thick so the oil just runs every where and drips. Oh, what a mess!!! As for cleaning the empty well, once emptied of oil! As you are dealing with an electric appliance, i do not have to explain why I could not just fill the well with hot soapy water! The back of the fryer does actually state that the appliance should not be immersed in water! I tried using a hot soapy sponge. But I was going nowhere very slowly! In the end, I used small amounts of water at a time to try to scold the well out! I also used kitchen paper to try to wipe the walls of the fryer. A long messy process.

When it is clean, it looks brilliant and has stayed in good condition despite being nearly ten months old.

If you want a simple no messing fryer to cook chips once in a blue moon, then this is great. I use the fryer a couple of times a week and dread cleaning it. I cooked scampi once and , honestly, I didnt use it again
for weeks as I really couldnt face cleaning it out!! If you have a big family or do alot of frying, spend a bit more money and get a better appliance!

My fryer was purchased from Morrisons at £19.99 but I have also seen them in Asda, Tesco and other electrical outlets. On a website called www.fullsteam ahead, the fryer is retailing at £32.00. The fryer comes complete with instructions leaflet which is clear, simple and very short. As you can imagine, there is not alot to say!

Thank you for reading.

Kerry xx

Sounds pretty good - I have a very similar (cheap) fryer, and have the same difficulties you described so far as cleaning goes, but as I too only use it very infrequently at least it doesn't need to be cleaned out too often!
