Advantages: Creates a quick and tasty snack in minutes, Very easy to use, Easy to clean
Disadvantages: Fillings can get very hot and you need to be very careful not to burn your mouth
My son has been nagging me for ages to make him cheese on toast as he loves it, unfortunately the grill on our oven has stopped working so I've been unable to make it for him for quite some time. A few months ago I purchased some toastie bags from Ideal World Shopping Channel which are made from Teflon and are designed to work by placing the bread and ingredients into the toastie bag and then cooking in the toaster, they were ok they weren't the same so I decided to invest in a toasted sandwich maker. The model I chose was a Swan SWE835. It is a classy charcoal grey colour with silver trim and cooks two toasties at a time. **HOW TO USE** The sandwich maker comes with an instruction manual which offers lots of advice, including how to use it and how to clean it. Before first use you are advised to simply wipe the non stick surface inside the grill with a damp cloth and that is it, you are now ready to start creating your toasted sandwiches. Firstly you have to switch on the toasted sandwich maker at the mains, there is a small indicator light on the front of the sandwich maker which illuminates when first turned on, one half of the indicator is red and the other half is green, both lights illuminate when you first plug it in and when the green light goes out the machine has reached the desired temperature and you can start cooking. During the cooking process the green light may come and go off but that is ok it is just the machine maintaining the correct temperature. The red light stays on all the time the machine is plugged in to show that it is switched on. To make a toasted sandwich you have to take two slices of bread and butter one side of each slice of bread, and get ready your filling. Once the toasted sandwich maker has reached the correct temperature you need to open it up and place one slice of bread, butter side down, in the marked space, next you need to add your filling by
placing it on top of the unbuttered side of the bread, and finally add the second slice of bread and put it on top of the filling butter side up. The reason for putting the butter side facing the cooking plates is to enable the toastie to brown. Once you have made the sandwich, close the lid and fasten the lock, which is at the front, the toastie machine will immediately begin cooking, it takes approximately 5 minutes for most sandwiches to cook but you can open the machine during cooking to check how brown the sandwich is getting and remove it whenever it looks like it is cooked to your liking. You are advised to use a plastic or wooden utensil to remove the sandwich so that you don't scratch the non stick surface. The machine is doesn't cut the sandwich but it does mark it and seal it into two individual triangles which you can cut by using a sharp knife. Whilst it is not quite cheese on toast my son is more than happy with his cheese toasties. There are lots of different fillings you can try including some of the following. Cheese and baked beans Ham and Cheese Ham and Tomato Sausage, (cook the sausage first) - you can add beans too if you like Bacon (again you need to cook the bacon first) Corned Beef and Baked Beans Cheese and Onion You can use whatever ingredients you like in your sandwiches really, so long as whatever you choose is suitable for cooking, if you are using raw meat, eg sausages you will need to cook them first. Be warned that cheese gets very hot and care should be taken to ensure you don't burn your mouth - I've burnt mine on several occasions and it hurts, if serving to children, allow a good 5 minutes to cool down before eating. To clean the toasted sandwich maker you just need to scrape any cooked on food off with a suitable plastic utensil and then wipe over the grill plates with a damp cloth. Don't try cleaning the ma
chine until it has cooled down as it gets very hot and you are likely to burn yourself if you attempt to clean it as soon as it has finished cooking. For a quick and easy tasty snack I would recommend investing in one of these, once you have made the initial outlay it is one of those items that you will use over and over again, even if you lose interest after a while then suddenly decide to get it out again 6 months later. I purchased my Swan Toastie from Littlewoods Catalogue as I had some commission to claim and it cost me £19.99, however this and other brand sandwich makers are quite widely available from places like Argos and Index and prices start from around £12.

nakedchoke - 10/10/02 We used to have one and I used it to cook bacon and eggs on by opening it up, the whole thing filled with grease and guess what we no longer have one.
I might have to buy one and hide it in my room or something and make my own food when we have something horrible for dinner.
Very good review although a little patronising, first you have to turn it on. Nah you dont say :D |
