Advantages: Cooks Meat with less fat and grease
Disadvantages: hard to clean
My mum and dad gave us a Baby George which is the the small version of the Original George Foreman Lean Mean Fat Reducing Grilling Machine. It is about 9 inches long by about 6 inches. To me it looks a bit like a toastie maker, without the lock on it. These are available from Makro at £12.99 but you pay the VAT on top. Or Argos have them for £27.50. My one is white all over but there seems to be a nice metalic blue colour with silver out now. Argos also have a classic black one for £14.50. The idea of these machines are that they are sloped to take the fat away from the meat while it is cooking. The grill has ridges which the fat drips into and then rolls down and falls into a dish which I thought was a corn on the cob dish. Now it says that they are non stick grilling plates which makes cleaning easy and that you just wipe clean with a damp sponge. BUT.....because my mum never gave me the instructions, I didn't realise that you are supposed to wipe the grills with a little oil!!!!! Otherwise I wouldn't have found it so hard to clean. The baby George is ideal for a single person or a couple but with 4 of us in this house it is now a necessity that we need to get a bigger one now. The grill manages 2 of everything like chicken breasts, burgers and small steak medalions but anything that is too big and it needs to be done in parts! The big test came...... I switched on the grill at the plug as there is no on/off button. A little orange light came on. Once the grill got hot enough the light switches off and it is ready to place the meat on. I noticed that there is a ticking noise sometimes, so I'm not sure if that is to do with the heat sensor. I placed the meat onto the grill, placed the corn on the cob holder underneath the bottom of the grill to catch the drips. Out of habit I kept turning the steaks over, and I'm one of those freaky people who like to make criss cross lines on the meat too. With
in 10 minutes my meat was cooked to perfection! The drips in the corn on the cob tray was urrrghhh! but was easily rinsed out and then put in the dishwasher. The cleaning of the grill was quite hard because my mum hadn't sent the instructions with it, but after a bit of cleaning I got it clean. Next time I used a little oil on a bit of kitchen roll and it seemed to be a bit better to clean and just wiped away. I normally switch the grill off at the plug and then leave to cool down before cleaning and then just take a damp cloth to it. I find the grill cooks the meat well, but wish there was a timer button or something to remind me how long I have been cooking for. I also wish there was a temperature guage too, just so that you could vary how you cook things. I've only cooked meat so far and it has been great! I'm not brave eough to do some veggies. My only thing is that I keep trying to shut it like a sandwich toaster and squash my meat, but one day I will learn. But the Baby George just isn't big enough for my family so we need Santa to bring us a big one and I really fancy the double knock out one! So Santa are you out there? I have been a good girl this year!
