I have admitted in previous reviews that I'm a major night owl and as any fellow night owls will know shopping channels can be mesmerising with their flashing images buy it NOW NOW NOW sales pitch and overly enthusiastic presenting style. I sit watching QVC, Ideal world and all their friends at ungodly hours but some times there are actual good products on these infomercials as they are referred to in the USA. One such example was this †JML Vacuum Food Sealer. I sat square eyed looking at a demonstration of this product on JML's very own channel. On this they demonstrated how simple this was to use and the many uses it can preform. By the end I was convinced I had to have one of these.
I have no idea, but I had to have one.
Within a few days of placing my order it arrived and I thought to myself what have I done as my family laughed at me.
The Vacuum Food Sealer is an all White electrical kitchen appliance that is pitched as the answer to food wastage. The idea is that if you cook too much food (which I do often) instead of throwing it out, or leaving it in the fridge only to be thrown out two days later. Instead of doing that I now plug in the unit ready to preserve my extra food.
To begin I first open the cover in order to insert the bag I must first press two buttons to realise it and then i can place the food into the bag and insert the opening of the bag between the top and the bottom of the sealer. I then simply close the lid and press the function I desire.
There are just to functions / options. I can either vacuum seal, this is where all the air is first sucked out of the bag then it is heat sealed shut locking out the air. Or I can just press the seal only button, this leaves the air in the bag and heat seals it shut sealing in the air while keeping any other air from entering the bag. I tend to always vacuum seal, when I do it makes some noise, not much, while it sucks out the air and a little light lights up. You can literally see the bag tighten around the food then the sealing begins this takes no time at all. I know when it's finished as the little light goes out as soon as the jobs done. I then lift the cover and remove the bag ready to be either stored in the fridge where it will last longer than it would have just sitting around or simply covered with cling film or tin foil. Or I can freeze it where it will last far longer and won't suffer from freezer burn like a lot of items can if wrapped in tin foil.†
The instructions are very simple to read and understand and there is a guide to how long you can keep certain foods in both the refrigerator and the freezer. As a rule most people will know that once opened most food can be kept for around three days, but after vacuum packing the same food it can be kept in the refrigerator for ten to fifteen days, quite a difference. They say you can also snip off a corner of the bag add a little water then microwave the contents although I have never done this myself. Other suggestions that my mother has done is to seal old letters from my dad and photographs that she wants protected.
This is a great very easy to use machine that sits on our counter top day in day out. Unfortunately I can not say the same for most of the things I have been brainwashed into buying. Now I'm off to watch some shopping channels.
