JML Vacuum Food Sealer
Advantages: easy to use
My mum bought me this Vacuum sealer after I saw hers and was quite impressed by it. There was a demonstration stand at a store she went to so she was 'sucked in' to buying one. I went to visit her one day and she was busy vacuum packing cooked vegetables and freezing them to make life easier during the week. Despite sounding quite novelty, I was quite jealous of it and wanted one for myself. A few weeks later she turned up with one and I could now be a member of the vacuum packing club! It is really helpful to have and we use it regularly throughout the week.

You can buy it online or from stores that stock the JML products for £39.99.
I guess this is just a fancy laminator really and indeed it looks like one. It is light enough to get out from the kitchen drawer when you need it and small enough to store away after use. To use the product you need to turn it on and plug it in. There are two options to select "Seal Only" or "Vacuum Seal." Seal only uses less pressure on the food and simply seals the bag at either end so the food is sealed in with some air. The vacuum seal sucks all the air out of the pack so your food is flatter. The vacuum packing is supposed to add an extra 5 days self life to food products as by removing the air, you are removing the oxygen that causes the food to start to go bad.
You can vacuum pack nearly everything you will find in the kitchen, all you need to do is put it in one of the bags and place the edge of the bag on the sealer, close the lid and hit the button. It will take a few minutes for the item to seal but once it is done you are left with a nice slim packet.
We have used the sealer to seal bags of vegetables and portions of meat to freeze. There is only two of us in the house so sometimes when there are certain offers on we buy in bulk and put things in the freezer for later on. In October we vacuum packed quite a lot of fresh pumpkin as I love pumpkin soup and in October you can get giant pumpkins for a pound whereas at this time of year I can't get hold of any. I can now take out my frozen pumpkin and make delicious soup or pies with. By vacuum packing it, it takes up less room in my freezer. This is probably not the best benefit for vacuum packing food though as you could just seal it in a bag. The best use for the machine comes from being able to seal meat. We buy carvey ham and it is always cheaper to buy larger packs so we tend to bring it home and vacuum pack half so that it lasts longer in the fridge. Cheese is another thing that goes off in our fridge quickly and by vacuum packing it will last so much longer.
I like to portion vegetables in the bags as it makes life easier at tea time we can just throw two veggie bags in the microwave and have delicious hot steamed vegetables with our evening meal.
The bags are supposed to be dishwasher proof and reusable but I found it annoying getting them washed and dry, my boyfriend also did not realise they were re usable and cut the meat out the packet when we wanted it. You can buy new bags at a reasonable price of £4.00 a packet or you can buy a roll of the plastic material that you can cut into the desired size, this means less wastage.
You are not limited to food items either, you can vacuum pack all sorts of items such as your toiletries so they do not leak when you are travelling abroad and you have them in the suitcase.
A handy tool to have but you really have to remember you have it. I either go mental and vacuum pack everything I have or I forget about it sat in the cupboard! I do find that I am using it more and more this year as I'm sick of the amount of money I spend on food. We do a big shop at Costco and buy things in bulk making this tool extremely usual as I split huge packets of meat and fish down to smaller ones.
Summary: A useful tool to have
