Advantages: The novelty value of eating Mikey Mouse's head for breakfast

Disadvantages: Children (and adults) must be warned about how hot the chrome gets!

What will they think of next? I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the Mickey Mouse waffle maker on the shelf at Currys- can I really eat Mickey Mouse's head for breakfast? With my sister's birthday around the corner I thought it would be the perfect joke present for her, and at just under £5 it cost less than the organic maple syrup to go on the waffles themselves!

So, we are now the surprisingly proud owners of a red and chrome piece of Disney madness. The machine itself is quite large (30cm by 25cm) and consists of two non-stick plates, with 4 imprints of Mickey's head on to pour the batter into. The cable for the machine is 1 metre long and I would recommend that you make full use of this so as to keep it out of reach of children if they might be tempted to touch the machine whilst it's cooking. I say this because as pretty and shiny as the chrome may be, it gets very hot when it has been heated; so much so that it actually melted the plastic handle of another kitchen appliance I had left touching it.

Another aspect that is slightly questionable in terms of its suitability for children is that one of the recipes included in the leaflet contains alcohol! I realise that cooking with alcohol is very different to drinking it, but it's the principle of the matter that slightly shocked me.

However, the machine can cook tasty waffles in less than 5 minutes, although we have yet to perfect the art of getting them to brown evenly on top and bottom. I think adding a little more baking powder would ensure the top of the waffle reaches the top plate where it can be cooked as well as the bottom of the waffle is.

Overall, the novelty value of this product never ceases to make me smile. But I would be very careful if young children were using it unattended, and a traditional shaped mould might be more reliable at producing an evenly cooked waffle.

Summary: Tasty waffles that make me smile, but it melted my toaster handle in the process.
