Advantages: Makes lovely smoothies

Disadvantages: Noisy, Expensive

Silence in Court. All please stand. Members of the Jury today you must decide if the case against the Kenwood New York Smoothie maker stands. Is it guilty of being noisy, too large and too expensive?

To sum up the case of the prosecution :-

1.The machine being used in a downstairs kitchen can wake people up whilst sleeping in the upstairs area of a semi-detached house, (this might be classed as something in its defence!) It sounds far too noisy even using soft fruits and no ice cubes, resembling the sound of a drill and causing strong vibrations.

2.It is too large for smaller kitchens. The machine will not fit under wall units set at 15ins. clearance, even with the stirrer removed from the goblet. The base is about 8ins square, but seems to take up a lot of room.

3.It costs about £30 - £40, for a lot of plastic and shiny chrome and a paper booklet with less than 2 sides of A4 information. A cheaper blender could make most smoothies, without the addition of ice cubes.

4. It can be difficult to wash and reassemble the parts. If the base is not attached properly the mixture leaks out. (Fortunately it drained right through and did dry out OK!) A dishwasher cannot be used for washing any of the parts.

5. Cannot be used for hot liquids, so cannot be used to blend soups, in fact can only be used for smoothies.

6. Should not be run for more than 60 seconds at a time.

7. The “Pulse” button used in a start/stop action to control the texture can cause the drink to be thrown up the sides and onto the lid – make sure the stirrer is in or you may get smoothie everywhere!

In it’s defence:-

1. Nicely packaged without too much wasteful cardboard, in a brightly coloured box with details about the machine.

2. Can be found cheaper if you are willing to search, as low as £28.35 on Amazon!

3. Has rubber feet to stop it moving whilst in use and a specially designed blade.

4. Recipe included for daytime smoothies and more adult recipes too. Helping people eat their 5 portions a day.

5. It has a tap to dispense straight into the glass.

6. Handy markings on the goblet for measuring ingredients, for up to 4 glasses.

7. Clear instructions on how to fill and which buttons to use, “mix” at the start for up to 30 seconds and “smooth” until the consistency required.

8. A stirrer is provided which fits into the lid to assist in making the smoothie.

9. It will be repaired or replaced if it goes wrong within one year provided it has not been misused and you still have the receipt.

Glancing at the dock, the Judge addressed the 1.5 litre funnel shaped goblet, with curvaceous chrome body, noting its powerful motor and positive push button controls and asked “Do you have anything to add?”

“Oh yes Milord I do” she cooed, “I make a mean smoothie. Do let me make you a coffee smoothie tonight, with 200ml. espresso coffee, 150ml. milk, 2 x 15ml Bailey’s liqueur and 4 scoops of vanilla ice cream, switch my controls to MIX for 10 seconds and then SMOOTH for 10 seconds and serve immediately!”

the Judge licked his lips in anticipation and the Jury then withdrew to sample the evidence.

Guilty or not guilty? What do you think?
