We've had water softeners for the last 46 years, I had become a fan of soft water by having it at work (Battersea Power Station).
We have always been very pleased with the result and consider that it is the very best investment you can make in the home.
We have used various types but the latest, Kinetico, was bought around 1984 and has worked perfectly without maintenance all that time. Still going strong.

Inherited this with our new house..always thought we would get one...best use in hard water areas.. - Advantages: less soap use, no nasty limescale on sinks/taps etc., skin feels softer - Disadvantages: cost, need to add salt
