Advantages: easy to use, easy to clean, creates wonderful meals with almost no effort
Disadvantages: took a couple of trys for me to get it right
I recently started a new job which has longer hours so by the time I got home i was starving and the last thing i wanted to do was spend ages cooking. After living off ready meals for a while my mum suggested I got a slow cooker. I saw this one in argos on sale for £14 so i thought why not!
I admit the first time i used it it didnt really work very well but that was my fault! I added cold liquid to it as i was running late when you are supposed to heat it up first. I also didn't quickly brown the meat or heat it all in a pan first, as i thought that kind of defeated the point of why i bought the thing in the first place! All this meant when i got home it wasnt cooked. I had to turn the heat to high then leave it on for another 4 hours to finish my stew!
The next time i used it I put the root veg in first then the meat on top (as per the instructions) then poured on boiling hot stock and a bit of red wine. Through in some herbs and switched it on to a medium heat. When I got home i was greated by a wonderful smell of stew filling the house. This time it was cooked properly and very nice it was too!
I have also found that a slow cooker is a brilliant way to make curries too, leaving it all day really helps to infuse the flavours and it tastes wonderful. Mine also came with some nice dessert recipies and I was also supprised to find that you can cok whole joints/chickens in it. Though I havent tried this yet but if i do i'll update the review and let you know if it works!
The non-stick ceramic dish was very easy to clean and the whole thing is not too big so it fit in the cupboard easily. If you prepare everything the night before it only takes 10 mins to set it all up in the morning. This cooker is incredibly easy to use as it only has 4 settings off/high/medium/low. Though i recommend you use the medium setting as the low one doesnt seem to cook it properly even if left on all day.
I would definately recommend this, especially if you work full time and like me cant stand ready meals! It has allowed my to eat much healthier as i now have proper meals on a night instead of convenience foods and it has saved me a fortune in takeaways!
If there are more then 2 of you I would recommend getting the 6 litre one instead of this one as it is not that big.
oh and it comes with quite a few recipies to get you started :)
Summary: easy to use, easy to clean, creates wonderful meals with almost no effort
