Advantages: beautiful, very clean, quick to boil

Disadvantages: could break

I never thought I could be proud of a kettle but I truly am.

I bought this gorgeous kettle about a year ago from Argos. I've heard that you can pay anything up to about £30 for one but I got mine for £24.

So what makes it such a treasure?

Well, I'm a minimalist wherever possible and a 'clean' freak, so the looks of this kettle really appealed.

It is basically a generous rounded, clear glass jug on a circular, white base. Aesthetically it is extremely pleasing!

I always hated the plastic kettles that got grubby finger marks on the outside and hid the filth and scale inside - waiting for a special occasion to sick it up into your brew.

The beauty of a glass jug is not only its vase like attraction, particularly artistic when filled with lively bubbles, but you know that it is spotlessly clean.

A few people have complained that the kettle sometimes froths over and builds up visible scale - needing regular cleaning. Well I have the solution:

It is very rare that you actually need to fill a kettle to capacity. It wastes water and electricity as well as taking longer to boil.

As in the recent electricity advert - only use as much water as you need. This kettle boils smaller amounts of water like lightening - faster than you can say 'Ja fancy a cuppa?'. The whole of the base of the jug is a heating element so the surface area spreads heat really quickly. Plus there's no unsightly twirly element to descale.

Onto descaling then. The simple solution to cut down on cleaning is to leave the kettle empty after use. This is particularly easy if you've only boiled the ammount you need - like I told you to!

You'll notice that without doing this the scale does build up but only to the level of the water each time - so it's obvious that if there's no water left in it - there's nothing to scale.

I saw a programme the other night th
at suggested you use cheap vinegar in place of descaler, when it does need doing. It worked on television so I'll be trying that next time.

One benefit of course is that you are rewarded when you do descale with a gleaming shiny bright glass bowl - plastic kettles always look the same after your hard work.

The swivel circular base means you can grab it from any angle and not worry about fiddly plugs.

You do have to be careful when filling the jug as it is glass, but I've found mine can withstand quite a battering without damage.

By far the best thing about my kettle is of course the comments I get. Whenever someone comes into my kitchen for the first time - it always gets remarked on.

I love it, it's very pretty and I might even get another to stash away just in case it comes to any harm one day after it has been discontinued!

How pretentious am I?!
