~*~*~ Salter Arc Electronic Kitchen Scale ~*~*~
~ What is it? ~
This is a small compact kitchen weighing scale by Salter. It has a very simple look being a small black square with two buttons and a screen. It is very simple to use which is why I like it.
~ Why I bought it ~
I really like to bake, cakes, biscuits, pizza's etc. And whilst I have always liked baking I had used cheaper mechanical scales in the past that I always ended up breaking or more to the point they would end up breaking through no fault of my own, so a year or so ago I decided whilst in Tesco to buy a decent weighing scale and when I saw this small Salter one for under £10 I popped it in my trolley. I didn't really think much of it, it looked like it would do the job I needed it to and that was that. A rather simple impulse buy if I am to be honest!
~ How does it look? ~
It's not a bad looking scale. It's just a plain black plastic square with two round buttons on the right hand side, a small 1.5 inch long - half inch wide screen on the left and Salter printed in the middle of the both in white print. The top and bottom have a straight edge and the sides are rounded and curve down. The underneath of it has four small rubber dots - the feet, and the battery compartment which simply needs to be turned to opened.
If your after a fancy looking scale this probably won't be the one for you as it is plain but not ugly in anyway in my opinion.
~ Using it ~
Using it couldn't be easier. The two buttons on the right hand side are simply the g - oz button where you can choose to measure in either grammes or ounces, the other is the on - zero button this is obviously the on button and where you can clear the scale back to zero without having to empty the bowl, this is the add and weigh function which I think makes baking a whole lot easier.
When making a cake for instance you need to measure flour, butter/margarine and sugar, with other scales this would mean measuring each one out separately, transferring the ingredient to another bowl and then repeating the process again until everything is weighed. But with this you can put a bowl onto the scale, add a measurement of sugar, press the button to take the scale back to zero and then you can add the butter directly to that bowl and then you can do the same for the flour, this means you are using less bowls which means less washing up at the end! Perfect!
It has a maximum weight limit of 3kg or 7lbs.
When you have finished the top can simply be wiped over with a damp cloth to keep it clean.
~ My thoughts ~
This is something I use quite a lot, last week for instance I made my mum a rainbow birthday cake which consisted of seven different coloured layers, I used the scale to measure my ingredients and it was perfect everytime. I particularly like the add and weigh function as this makes the whole process easier for me.
I would estimate that I use this scale at least twice a week if not more and I have owned it for well over a year now and as of yet I haven't needed to change the battery.
Since I bought it I have read some bad reviews on this but I really have nothing bad to say about it at all. It weighs everything accurately and all my baking comes out brilliantly if I do say so myself!
My only problem with them is that they don't come with a bowl which in hindsight I think I would have preferred but I will not be replacing these until they break so I will make do with my own bowl for the time being!
The battery it takes is a Lithium CR2032 which is included and as of yet I haven't needed to replace it. They also come with a very generous 15 year guarantee.
Looking online I can see that they can also be bought in white yet the only option available when I bought them was black.
Thanks for reading :o) x
Summary: A good set of weighing scales with a generous 15 year guarantee from Salter.
