Advantages: Large display panel and slimline size

Disadvantages: Large plate or bowl can obscure the display panel

My kitchen scales hadve been playing up for a while so I decided to splash out and buy a new set. After looking at various options I settled on a set of these Salter electronic scales. Having only a small kitchen where there is a distinct lack of space, the first thing that appealed to me was the size, as they are very compact. They are slimline (about 2.5 cm in depth) and are designed for easy storage - you can pop them sideways on a shelf to store.

If like me, you have difficulty in reading the display panel on scales, you will have no problem with these as the backlit LCD display is very large and easy to read (even without glasses on!). You can weigh food directly onto the scales' flat platform or, if you wish to use a bowl, you can make use of the "add and weigh" feature. This enables you to weigh one ingredient, zero the display then add another. The can weigh up to 5 kgs.

They are very easy to operate as there are only two operating buttons which are located on the side. One is the On/Off button and the other the kg/lb button, which allows you to switch between metric and imperial units at any time during weighing. They use 2 x AAA batteries which are housed in a compartment in the bottom of the scales. To maximise the battery life, auto switch off occurs if the display shows zero for one minute or shows the same weight reading for 3 minutes. The display panel also lets you know when the batteries need replacing and displays an "Err" message when there is too much weight on the scales. Cleaning is simply a case of wiping the scales with a damp cloth as they cannot be immersed in water.

Prices vary depending on where you purchase them, I paid £35 for them in John Lewis and although I think it was money well spent I have since seen them a lot cheaper elsewhere. Therefore, if you are thinking of buying them it will defintely pay you to shop around - something I didn't do to my cost!

Summary: Easy to store on their side if storage space is at a premium

Can't say how long the batteries will last as I have only had the scales about a month. Also depends how often you use the scales. I use mine several times a day and am still on my original batteries.

Infact these ones are now £24-99 at Argos.

VG review here - would be good to know on average how long one set of batteries last in this scale though.
