Advantages: Cheaper than shop Bought, Lower Calorie , Choice of Flavours

Disadvantages: Considerable Outlay, Kids want more pop

Everyone has heard of Soda Stream, and we have two of their drinks’ makers. The old version which is slim line and only takes one sizes (500ml) glass bottles and the new “Classic” model which takes 1/4 Litre, ½ Litre and 1 Litre Plastic Bottles.

The Soda Stream company started in 1903 and their first machine was called the “Prince of Wales” and was only found in Rich Homes.

The 80's saw the “Get Busy with the Fizzy” ads on the TV and it seemed that every home had one (Except ours).

Our first machine (the old-fashioned one) was a Charity Shop Bargain at just £1 including a gas cylinder and two glass bottles, and just this week we bought a new “Classic” model to replace it.

With three young children who love fizzy drinks, this is a real life saver, though I much prefer the newer model with it’s large 1 Litre Bottles which make enough drink for five of us to enjoy at one time. Although the initial outlay is quite a bit (£32 from Wilkinsons) the savings are quite big in daily use.

The £32 included the Drinks Maker, a Gas Cylinder (which cost around £12 to buy or £4 to exchange as they are sent back and refilled), and two 1-litre Carbonating bottles which cost £2 each to replace. (This means that the actual machine would have only been £16 if it could be purchased on it’s own).

Each Gas Cylinder will carbonate approximately 30 Litres of water. Thus making the carbonating about 7.5 pence per litre and the Concentrate is £2.50 per 500 ml which makes 12 Litres making the cost of that about 21 pence per litre. Thus, a 1 litre bottle of fizzy drink costs less than 30 pence. Less than a can in the shops.

There is a wide range of flavours available, in concentrate. These include Cola, Diet Cola, Lemonade, Diet Lemonade, Cream Soda, Cherry, Dandelion and Burdock, Orange, Ginger Ale, Ginger Beer, Tonic, Diet Tonic, Bitter Lemon. There is als
o a new Duo’s range at 99p for 3 x 1 Litre Serving available in Apple & Peach, Cranberry & Blackcurrant, Orange & Mango and Pineapple & Grapefruit.

You don't even have to use their Concentrates, but can simply use the carbonated water in any Cordial to make a refreshing fizzy drink.

Just make sure that you Carbonate the water before you add the flavouring or you get a lovely sticky mess all over your kitchen and no drink in the bottle!!!!

Soda Stream products are available from many leading stores including Tesco, Morrisons, Asda, Sainsburys and Somerfield, but if you have difficulty in obtaining the products you can buy direct. For more details see the web site www.sodastream.co.uk where there is more information about the company, a complete product range and competition to win a Soda Stream drinks maker and £10 of Concentrates, or £40 worth of Concentrates if you already have a machine.

My Mum used to have one of these, when I was little.
