Advantages: Super fast toaster, dual variable controls, cook toast for different tastes at the same time
Disadvantages: Not perfect, occasionally need to turn toast over .
Having a fairly large family (who all like toast) I finally decided it was time to buy an electric toaster. Up until now, I had got by using the grill on my cooker, but it was becoming an increasingly time consuming process to prepare enough toast for everybody in the house. My actual requirements were fairly basic, any toaster I bought would have to be able to cook 4 slices at once, be silver in colour (to match the rest of my kitchen appliances) and be as cheap as possible.
The Tefal Avanti Deluxe four slice toaster fulfilled all these criteria, and a little more besides, and at £24.99 in Argos it was an absolute bargain that I simply couldn't miss. Colour and design-wise it's very stylish with black and silver tones, and an unusual curved profile, it certainly fits in with the rest of my appliances. As far as cooking with it goes, there are plenty enough options for me to be able to toast almost anything I could think of.
Each of the four slots automatically adjusts to the thickness of whatever I'm toasting, so a teacake or crumpet is held as securely as the thinnest slice of bread. There are two separate browning controls (each with 6 different levels) so two different shades of toast can be cooked at the same time, and the toast cooks exceptionally quickly, far, far quicker than anything I can manage with the grill. One problem I do find is that due to the funky design, there are occasions when the top of the toast doesn't brown as well as the rest, but this is easy to solve (simply turn the toast over). As well as plain toast, I've used this to produce some very nice toasted teacakes, crumpets and even used the warm function to heat scotch pancakes. The ability to cook from frozen is also there, but not one that I've ever bothered with, bread just doesn't last long enough in this house to be frozen.
Other than the usual toasting functions, there are independent controls to cancel the toasting process, warming function (only operates the two left-hand slots) which as I said warms scotch pancakes very nicely, levers that raise smaller items for easy removal, cool wall to help prevent burning hands (the outside does still get a little warm) and two easy to clean crumb trays. All of this adds up to a very nice toaster that makes my life much easier, the toast is cooked so fast that I can now manage to cook eight slices in less time than it used to take to cook four on the grill. This means my family is happier at toast time, as they all can get fed quicker. Add to this the fact it's easy to clean, the cool wall is relatively cool, and the toaster appears to be very durable and this is great value for money at only £24.99 in Argos. So if you have a large family, or simply enjoy eating lots of toast, what are you waiting for, get yourself to Argos and buy one now.
Summary: Nice toaster at a very, very nice price...
