Advantages: Brilliant gadget for the kitchen, Kids love the donuts and can have them whenever they fancy them, Easy to clean
Disadvantages: The donuts are very small, but then it is a mini donut maker!
I'm going to tell you about one of my Christmas presents. Well, it was actually a Christmas present to myself at the beginning of December so I could suss out how to use it and dazzle my guests on Christmas Day with small but perfectly formed donuts. You see, everyone loves donuts. So when I was mooching in Birminghams posh new market for Christmas pressies and I came across this Walford Donut Maker for a tenner I thought I'd grab it. The rrp for these things are usually around the twenty five quid mark so I figured even if it was only used now and again I'd got a bargain. The instruction leaflet that came with it (well, a photocopy of the instruction leaflet because it was so cheap) simply tells you how to switch the donut maker on and a basic recipe for making up the donut mixture. The machine itself is roughly the same size and shape as a Breville toastie maker and it works in roughly the same way except for the fact that as you're making donuts the part inside is (obviously) ring shaped as opposed to cut out ready for slices of bread. The inside of the machine where you spoon your donut mixture is of the same non-stick material as a Breville and the donut maker also incorporates a small light on the lid to let you know when your machine is at the correct temperature for cooking your perfect donuts. One thing I didn't realise when I brought this donut maker is it makes miniature donuts but as each set of six donuts only takes 3 - 4 minutes to cook, it's easy enough to make a couple of batches when there are pigs about who aren't satisfied by one mini donut! So what do you do? Simple. Make up the donut mixture as per the recipe in the instruction leaflet, spoon the mixture into the six donut shaped indents in the donut maker, close the lid and twiddle your thumbs for around 3 minutes leaving the machine to cook the donuts to perfection. Simplicity itself. The donuts usually cook within the 3 minutes recom
mended but don't be too rigid with the timing because sometimes they will need slightly longer, the best thing to do is check them after three minutes and then every 30 seconds thereafter and simply remove them when they turn a dark golden colour. There isn't much smell as your donuts are cooking other than a vague frying smell. Although the inside of the donut maker is non-stick I always give it a quick spray of Fry Light (spray cooking oil) before I put the donut mixture in because it makes cleaning the machine a lot easier, simply wipe the inside with a damp cloth and it's done and ready to be put away. Without using the spray oil I found the cleaning was more difficult as some of the donut mixture would invariably stick to the 'non-stick' part and then you're cleaning the thing for hours with a scourer! Using the oil also helps to remove the donuts once they're cooked as they don't stick... so much... lol Once the donuts are cooked they are absolutely delicious. This donut maker makes similar donuts to those you buy from market stalls, you know what I mean; buy six donuts in a greasy bag that threatens to fall to bits under the sheer weight of hot fat? Anyway, when I say these are similar I mean in taste only because the only grease added to these donuts is the small amount of fat you use to prevent them from sticking to the maker. The donuts are lovely and chewy but with a slightly crisp outside edge, we dip our donuts in sugar while they're still hot and make a chocolate sauce to dip the warm sugared donuts in. The kids love this donut maker because there are always fresh donuts whenever they want them, I love the donut maker because it's so quick and easy to make donuts and Mark loves it because it was such a bargain! ~*~*~ A LOVELY DONUT DIP ~*~*~ Cut a 100g bar of Toblerone into small pieces and place in a heavy based saucepan over a very gentle heat. Add 3 tbsp golden s
yrup and 3 tbsp cream and stir continuously until the Toblerone has melted and is warm. Warm a serving bowl, pour in the Toblerone sauce and serve with warm donuts. Delicious. Thanks for reading.
