Apple iPhone 3G 16 GB
Advantages: Easy to use, apps are amazing
Disadvantages: Scratches Easily
I got my iPhone 3G when my contract for my original iPhone ran out, so I was a big fan already and the decision to get one was a no brainer!
But what if you have another phone and fancy a change?
Why would you go for the iPhone?
I'll tell you why.........it's brilliant!
The phone comes with many Apps and features already and waiting for you on the phone. They include;
Safari (Web Browser)
Safari is Apple's web browser (Like internet Explorer on Windows). It is really easy to use and you can go to more or less any website you want to. At the top of the screen is and area to type in a web address and a Google search box. If you tap on either of these you will bring up the keyboard. The keyboard is laid out in the standard QWERTY way and so is fairly easy to use. If using the phone in portrait they letters are quite small and close together so it is very easy to press the wrong thing. but, heres the clever bit if you turn the phone in to landscape they whole screen rotates and the keyboard becomes bigger, making it much easier to type.
So Safari works like a standard web browser, type in the address and the page loads. If the writing is too small you can zoom in. If you want to zoom on a specific section you can double tap it and it will automatically zoom in to fill the screen. Alternatively you can use two fingers and spread the apart on the screen. to zoom back out use two fingers and bring them closer together on the screen.
At the bottom of the screen you have back and forward, add bookmark, view bookmarks and view open pages buttons. These are pretty self explanatory, but if you own a mac all of you bookmarks you have on your safari browser will be synced with your iPhone, making it very easy to find your favourite websites!
This is a standard calender where you can set reminders for all of your important dates. You can have more than one calender with the option to view one or all of them at any one time. The calender itself can be viewed in a monthly view (with all events listed at the bottom), Day view (events listed hour by hour) or list view (all events in your calender are listed with the dat above them).
Again if you have a mac all of your events will be synced with the calender on computer. Easy to keep track of everything!
Calculator & Clock -
The calculator is well, a calculator. It is a simple standard calculator in portrait, but in land scape it changes into a slightly more complicated scientific calculator. Always handy for those situations when you wished you had a calculator!
The clock feature has several parts to it. It is a World Clock, Alarm, Stopwatch and a Timer. you can add as many world clocks and alarms as you want, and with the alarms you can call them whatever you want and even set which days you want it to go off!
The camera is one of my only disappointments with this phone. You look at all the other new phones around at the moment and they have 5,8 and even 12 MP cameras. What does the iPhone have? 2MP!
If you are thinking of using the camera on your phone a lot then I regret to say this may not be he phone for you. I use the camera occasionally and it is fine, its just not brilliant. For all those special occasions I use a digital camera.
Mail, Messages & Phone -
These are the three basic features you would expect any phone to have. The Mail feature allows you to access your web email account (Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail etc). It gets your emails and downloads them to the phone.
Messages allows you to write SMS and send Pictures via SMS. You compose your message using the keyboard as mentioned before. The messages you send to people are saved under the recipients name. When you tap on the persons name all the messages you sent and received form that person are displayed as a conversation.(Very cool!)
The all important phone! This has several features. Along the bottom of the screen it has favourites, recents, contacts, keypad and voicemail buttons. Favourites displays all of you contacts that you have favourited. This makes it easier to find all the numbers that you use all the time. Recents shows all of the calls you have made, received and missed. Contacts shows all your contacts (believe it or not!) in alphabetical order. Keypad brings up the phone keypad where you can dial numbers just like any other phone. Voicemail brings up a list of people you have missed calls from and have left you messages. You then just click on the name and the message will be played, and you have a option to ring them back. The best bit about the phone is that when you are making a call the phone knows when you have the handset up to you face. It then turns the screen off so you don't accidently press anything. How cool is that!
one of the most important part about an iPhone is the applications or apps. The phone comes with several already on the phone. Including; iPod, Weather, Maps etc (Listed above).
The App store is where you can buy new apps. It has literally thousands to choose from, and anything you need help with there is probably and app to help you with it! The prices of the apps do vary a lot. There are loads of free ones, but they are usually demos or lite versions. Sometimes though there is no need to pay a fortune as the free app does the job just as well!
The phone its self is quite big. Its about the size of a remote control just a little bit wider. It isn't that heavy compared to the size, and you don't really notice it as it will fit into your pocket quite easily.
I have the black version but it does also come in white. I've had mine now for around 6 months and it has a lot of scratches on the back of the phone. These are from throwing it in my bag/in the table etc. I don't know but I would imagine that scratches would be less visible on the white version.
The front of the phone is basically all touch screen with a button at the bottom. This button returns you to the home screen from wherever you are. This is probably the most important part of the phone. Without this button you would be stuck in whatever application you open! (So look after it!)
On the left hand side there is a switch to turn the phone into silent mode and volume up and down buttons. On the top of the phone is the on off switch, a headphone socket and the sim card tray. On the bottom of the phone is the all important connecter for the USB wire and a speaker. The speaker isn't that good, but it does it's job. If you want to use it as a stereo buy some external speakers!
The iPhone basically does everything you need a phone to do and more! It has all the features of a normal phone and also has those all important apps, that make the uses of the phone endless. It also has a fully functioning iPod (Exactly the same as an iPod touch), so is well worth the price. If you don't have one already get one now!
Summary: It does everything you could ever wish for, except cook and clean!
