Advantages: App store = fab
Disadvantages: Poor camera, huge price tag
I bought the iPhone 3G as I wanted a cheap (ish) way to see what the iPhone buzz was all about, and I must say I wasn't terribly impressed. I apologize if this review isn't in any logical order, it's just how I think of things!
At £300, it was definitely the most pricey phone i'd ever bought, and I don't think it was the best by a long shot. I had never owned an iPod touch, so was completely new to the world of 'apps', and I must admit I did find the app store to be fantastic. Such a huge catalog of games, entertainment and other usefulness. Some games are EXTREMELY overpriced, and with games on the app store my advice is definitely to see if it has a 'lite' or free version first, to see if you like it. There are some free hidden gems however, as games such as TapTap Revenge have kept me amused for hours. On a slightly downside, some things really are a pile of tosh so read any reviews and rating for apps first before you buy.
The ability to download songs from the itunes store I really loved. There were times when I wanted to listen to a song, didn't have it, and I could get it in moments. Youtube is good too.
The design of the iPhone I cant really fault, other than the back gets very scuffled from just generally sitting on table tops (most phones have this issue) but the glossy back really is lovely so you might consider a case to keep it in good condition.
The camera was a definite downside for me. I could never fathom how such an impressive phone could have such a poor camera! A know the iPhone 3G has been around a long time, but I know there were phones around at the time with far better camera's than 2MP! And no video camera either! (Side note, the 3GS update does have a video camera feature)
The wireless is very good, and it's nice to be able to connect it to your home router. Beware of using the internet on the go though if you are on PAYG or not included in your contract, as data charges are hefty and a bolt on (from o2 anyway) is £7.50 per month.
In the end I packed in the iPhone because the lack of a decent camera just got me. I know I know, digital camera's and all that but I don't really carry my camera around and I like to take shots and video's on the go. I sold my iPhone and managed to get a lovely Samsung Tocco with an 8MP for a fraction of the price, plus an iPod Touch to satisfy my app cravings!
All in all I would say although the App Store is fab, don't get an iPhone. There are just too many better, non-apple phones around with better camera's, better features, and a more pocket friendly pricetag.
But if you still insist on buying one, then get this or the 3GS.
At least you can hold it and still get a signal! *subtle dig at iPhone 4* :)
Summary: So many better phones available
