A benchmark for quality in the smartphone market, the 3GS is attractive looking, durable, reliable and packed with features. Battery life is the only slight downfall for what is otherwise an almost flawless phone.

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

Its a good easy phone that i would recommend for people.

The Iphone 3gs is a slim, fast and good quality phone. on the Iphone 3gs the apps are ran so smoothly that there is hardly any wait when waiting for your phone to load. Its easy to slip in your pocket because of its slim feature and it is light so it hardly makes it noticeable if playing a sport or just walking around supermarkets. the phone does take a bit of time to charge and the battery life isnt great if you have to many apps running at the same time. The time is automatically set and you cdan adjust the brightness to your needs and how you feel comfortable most. The phone is very great and i would advise it to people looking for an easy use smartphone. It can be styled so cases can be put on to suit your preference. Its very safe for kids to use via child locks etc.

        amazing

I had this phone on contract when it first came out and ive got to say its the best phone ive ever had and its pretty much indestructible. I never had a problem with it and its super reliable. I had this phone when i was attacked in 2011 in my home and the attacker tried to destroy it when i was ringing the police but would it break...no. It was thrown against a wall, jumped on and even ripped open but when pieced back together still seemed to work perfectly which ive never known anything like it. given the situation thinking about it later is quite comical. This phone survived the works and was there in my time of need with no problems. It has survived two young children, an attacker and a brick wall and was still as reliable as the day i got it. Could not ever ask for a better phone.

Buy if you HAVE to have an iPhone but if you'd rather a faster, more modern experience look elsewher

The iPhone has long been the smartphone to beat (if you like Apple that is) when the 3GS came out it was revolutionary and arguably the best smartphone on the market. 3 years on however, it is really starting to show its age. Because it's an iPhone these still fetch around 100 and for the same price you could get a Nokia 520 which has received brilliant reviews for being one of the best value smartphones currently available. It'll be much faster than the 877mhz (estimated) single core processor of the iPhone 3GS. The benefit the 3GS has of course is the app store, although in 2013 the operating system and apps will run considerably slower on this device than on recent iPhones. Buy if you absolutely have to have an iPhone but otherwise search around for a better deal. The positives I have to say about this phone are that its very well built, which is a given considering Apple's track record, it's reliable, the call quality is very good, it's very good for mobile data and the iOS6 operating system is full-featured.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

Not the best iPhone but certainly a must by.

The iPhone 3GS was my first Apple phone but not my first Apple product, before this I had the lovely iPod Touch which I used for my music and the applications. After this went missing I decided to try the iPhone seem as everyone claimed it was basically an iPod Touch with calling and messaging capabilities.

What I had heard wasn't a lie and I had no need to go out and purchase an iPod Touch anymore as the 3GS did everything I wanted it to do and more. The phone is heavier than your typical phone but the sleek design makes it easy to handle. The touch screen is fully responsive and never once had the problem that you sometimes find with some touch devices when you are having to press several times to actually press where you want to.

Now down to the features, the phones speakers are actually louder that expected which meant using this as a music player was great, especially the headphones that come with them. Just don't lose the headphones as they aren't cheap to re-purchase (Same goes for the iPhone original charger). The calling, messaging and internet access is as expected and works with no flaws and no downfalls from my view. The picture quality however of the camera is something that I wasn't fully satisified with and the lack of a flash meant taking pictures in the dark was a big no. Only other downfall to this is the battery life, if I played one game on the phone through the day it would mean for certain that I would be charging it up at night.

Overall though the downfall of the picture quality and camera is really nothing when you think of all the benefits and features of the phone itself. Who wouldn't want a phone that has internet, games, apps, notes, music, email, messaging, calls etc.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

iPhone is the best phone I have had!

This phone is very easy to use and the touch screen is very responsive. It has everything that you need in a phone. Text, phone, very good Internet, apps and of couse music and videos from iTunes so you no longer need to carry a separate iPod and phone. The camera records both still images and videos but it is not as good as the camera on some other phones although the photos that it takes are ok. The map application is very useful and can help you to find your way easily. As well as being able to transfer songs and other ITunes content from your computer, you can also download songs on your actual phone because it has iTunes and App Store apps.
The Internet is very good. Web pages appear as they would on a computer and checking your emails is easy because there is a mail app that you can link to your email address so that emails go to your phone.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

A brilliant phone with a couple of minor issues.

I have finally gotten round to updating my Nokia N8. MY daughter had an iphone that she didn't use because she didn't like it, but it was a bit scratched so she didn't think it would be worth selling so I've ended up with it.

I was quite daunted because of the hype surrounding them, I assumed it would be very difficult and technical to use but I'm pleased to say I was wrong.

          Look . . .
I think that the phone is very modern and nice looking. It's curved shape at the back means it fits nicely into your hand, and the size is ideal. It fits nicely in my pocket but the screen is still clear and easy to see. The amount of cases that are available as well is fantastic. I'm currently sporting a hard case with a polkadot design. You can always jazz your phone up and protect it, so its a great model to own.

          Use as a phone. . .
I find the phone quite easy to use. I actually find it easier than I did my N8, which I was suprised about. The icons i.e. the call icon is big, the colours are bright and the display is clear meaning I don't have any difficulty finding what I'm looking for. Volume is easily controlled by the buttons on the side, or you have a little button you can slide accross to totally silence it. This is a simple but great feature as you can turn it to silent now without having to go through the settings like on older phones. It's a really quick phone too, I found lots of delays with the N8 but this phone is fast, when you touch something it comes up straight away. The settings on the phone are easy to locate and change, it's easy to call and answer calls and messaging is quite simple. The only problem I had with the messaging was getting used to the small buttons. When reading or texting, you can turn the phone on its side and the screen turns with it, making the letters bigger. I don't really use this feature as I prefer to hold the phone upright but it can be helpful. The camera isn't awful on the phone, the N8 camera was much better where the 3gs only sports a 3mp camera with no flash. I tend to find in good light I can take some nice shots. And I have finally figured how to zoom!

          Extras . . .
As I have put my old sim card in which was on contract, I have internet access. I'm able to access the app store which I think is brilliant. It turns the phone into a handheld computer. The app store contains just about everything you can think of, and probably stuff you would never have thought of. Everything from magazines and books to trivia games and music applications can be found. Many of these are free, some are paid but they're all quite cheap anyway. I'm not a big game fan, but have downloaded a couple of games like draw something which allowed you to play a game similar to pictionary with other iphone/ ipad users. The games are good quality and usually quite addictive. Other apps can be quite useful, I've downloaded a calorie counter which allows you to put what foods you've eaten in, exercise completed and it tells you how many of your daily allowance calories you've consumed. The appstore also gives you the opportunity to update apps that you have downloaded. This means that games you've completed get new levels and additional features which I think is a great idea to keep games going. You can also use the internet page. This page allows you to search for anything you're looking for, which for me is usually google. I love this feature on the phone as it does feel like I am carrying a computer around with me. You can actually download the app for google so the google page opens straight up but I haven't got round to it yet.

          Itunes . . .
Itunes is the programme used when you plug your phone into the computer. You can buy music through this and put it onto your phone. I haven't used it much at all so I can't say very much about it. It's good to see how much data you've used on the phone and how much you have left, although in the 32g model, it's not much of an issue as you can put incredible amounts of information on it. I've only purchased one song through I-tunes. I think it cost about 66p which wasn't bad. It doesnloaded quickly and I had it on my phone within five minutes.

          Downsides . . .
I do love the phone and can't see me wanting to update it any time soon, but it does have a few negative points. The camera lets it down a little bit, it's a technological phone that is so modern, but the camera quality is quite poor for such a new phone. I think the phone charger is fantastic the way the usb pulls out of the plug and can be used with your computer to save having two wires, but the wire is very short. When I charge the phone in bed, the wire is too short, so I have to put the phone on the floor as it doesn't reach the table. Another negative thing about this phone is the battery life. I don't sit playing games all day or playing music, but after ann night charge, the battery tends to be dead by around 8pm the next day so it's back on charge. This is frustrating when you have a hectic day and have to leave your phone charging.

All in all I love the phone. It has a couple of downsides but nothing worth upgrading and getting rid of the phone for. I would definitely recommend them to others, if I can use on, anyone can! You can pick them up quite cheap now, I've seen them for around £100 online, definitely worth the money.

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

A phone you just won't be able to put down

            IPhone 3GS 32G

When I got my iPod I was over the moon with it and still am. I never in a million years thought I'd ever get an iPhone, for a start the price of them is ridiculous to say the least, yes they may well be the best thing since sliced bread but really, the price of iPhones amazes me and what amazes me even more is that people actually fork out all that money just to get their hands on one. Now the only reason I have one is because my old phone (not a smartphone) lost the will to live, I guess I didn't help it any by throwing it across the room because it never responded to me. So, I needed a new phone. There was no way I could afford a top of the range iPhone, in fact there was no way I could really afford an iPhone full stop. However I didn't want just a normal phone again, I ended up hating my previous one. So I did what I always do when I can't afford what I really want brand new and went to visit EBay.

Where I got mine and what I got with it

I bought my unlocked iPhone 3GS 32g used from EBay and it cost me £150.00 I was a little apprehensive about paying out a fair bit of money for something that could have ended up being a piece of junk. All I got with the phone was a black leather case, which I choose not to use. The things I would have got if I'd have bought new would have been a charger, a USB cable, earphones, possibly a few pretty stickers and a box. I didn't need a charger, I have loads of USB cables, the earphones are useless anyway and why would I want stickers and the box? So I was okay with my purchase, there are a few signs of wear and tear on the back of the phone which incidentally is white which I'm not over keen about but I have rectified this by buying a nice new cover for it.

            Getting to know my iPhone

So now I have my reasons for purchasing out the way I'll tell you just what this phone is like and what it can do. Well let's just say it's an iPhone it can do everything, well near enough. I love the look of the iPhone the best thing being that there are no ugly buttons stuck all over it, the only button is the home button and this is positioned so neatly, I hardly notice it's there at all. Another good thing for me is the fact that the earphone socket is on the top of the phone, away from the charging port. This bothered me about my iPod because the earphone socket was next to the charging port; they were crammed to close together in my opinion. Anyway along the top of my iPhone is the sim draw and if I hadn't read up on iPhones beforehand, I would never have worked out where to put my sim card, and the fact I would need something with a sharp point to get the drawer open, luckily I have safety pins, one of these worked spot on. So once I had my sim card all set up I was ready to explore my iPhone. As I am familiar with the layout of an iPhone due to using my iPod it didn't take me long to sort it all out. For those not familiar with the way an iPhone works, I wouldn't worry because as soon as you get one you just know what to do, everything is so easy with an iPhone, because everything you touch leads to the next thing you need to do to set it up and so on. As with all Apple products ITunes is needed to be installed on your computer as this is the way in which you work your iPhone with your computer.

Things I would want to know

I actually managed to import all my contacts from my sim onto my iPhone, this I did through the settings. Everything I need to know is there somewhere. If I were to get stuck with something the Apple support communities are fantastic for helping me out, I had one or two problems occur with my iPod and they were straight onto it and helped me sort it out. No one ever needs to feel alone with a problem with an Apple product, there are so many people out there who will help you out.

Okay, so now we come to the main reason I wanted the phone, to play games.....no only joking the main reason was so I could make calls and text people. First off, making a call is really simple I have a choice to just dial the number I require or I can open up my contacts and do it that way. The quality of sound when I am listening to someone on the other end is really clear, I don't hear any crackling or interference but I guess this has a lot to do with what sort of reception I'm picking up. I'm with Orange and the reception and signal I get are usually pretty good. Answering a call is so easy I just slide to unlock which also answers the call. Texting is great fun; I really enjoy texting on my iPhone because of the whole speech bubble thing. This was all new to me and the way I can keep track of the conversation is such a good idea. I remember hating that about my old phone once I had been texting a while I would often forget what the conversation was about in the first place without having to individually check my sent items, that was such a drag. Now it's all so much better and easier. If I am texting my daughter who also has an iPhone the speech bubbles are blue which indicates we are both using imessage, this is an application which I already had on my phone and it automatically sends messages this way when imessage is available on the recipients phone. I did have to set this up in the settings before-hand though. But it means free messages and it can be used as much as I like.

Then we have all the usual Apps, I won't go into all the Apps because there are so many, if you decide an iPhone is for you then I'm sure you will enjoy finding out all about these by yourself. Personally I have both the iPlayer and ITV Player Apps and these work really well, even though I am watching on a 3.5 inch screen it doesn't matter because the sound is good and the picture is amazing. Even YouTube videos play well on my iPhone. I have all my music now installed on my phone and the playback is really great, but that could be down to my earphones being really good. It is fair to say that most if not all Apps open up straight away and usually work really well, there may be the odd occasion when an App won't cooperate but I think this is the fault of the particular App and not the iPhone.

            Internet, Charging and Memory

Browsing the internet is quite good, the pages seem to load up pretty fast and the pinch screen and zoom work really well, scrolling up and down different pages doesn't seem to lag either. I have no problem with using the internet on my iPhone because it's fast enough for me and it's easy. I can connect using 3G or wifi, I usually opt for wifi and I don't have any problem connecting and staying connected.

I charge my iPhone overnight on a docking station so I can't really say how long it takes to fully charge from dead, but the battery life is really useless in iPhones anyway and it's best to charge often if you use your phone a lot. I've found that games are the biggest battery life killers.

I had wanted to make sure I got an iPhone with plenty of memory because I remember how quickly my iPod started to fill up and because I can't buy extra memory for my iPhone I needed to make sure it was big enough for my needs. So I was happy when the one I'd chosen was a 32g the same as my iPod which is a great size for my needs. I was also glad that the 3GS took a normal sized sim, whereas the 4 and 4S both take a micro sim and I couldn't be bothered with all that at the time. The 3GS does feel quite heavy when I compare it to my old phone but I guess there is so much more going on in an iPhone. If I'd have purchased new, I would have had a choice of black or white and personally I would have preferred a black one but it's covered up now anyway so I don't mind.

            If Money was no object

I would have loved an iPhone 4, micro sim or not, but the amount they cost is just too much for me and I couldn't justify spending that much on a phone. I know I have moaned about the price of these iPhones but I also know if money were no object I would definitely buy myself a new iPhone 4. To buy a brand new iPhone 3GS it will cost you anything from £220 upwards but then this depends on the size of memory you require. Of course you can go on a contract and most of them give you the phone free but I didn't want to be tied into a contract, I'm happy with pay as you go. I was lucky in my opinion to get mine for the price I did but I guess that was just the chance I took, but I was willing to risk it because I wanted one so bad. I would recommend this middle of the road iPhone, it has plenty going for it, it's fast enough to respond when I need it to, and it looks nice but most of all it's a joy to use.

I apologise to those of you who may have hoped to read lots of technical jargon and specifications, but I don't really know that much about that side of things, so I've written about what I do know in order to hopefully help someone on a purchase decision.

Thank you for reading my review which may also appear on other sites.

              Disadvantages

A great phone bar the battery life

Having cancelled my contract early; I decided to buy by a unlocked iphone. When I first got it I was very impressed with its features such as a built in compass and youtube app. I was also impressed by the app store. The app store is a place where the phone comes alive in my opinion as that is where you download your needed apps.

I also liked the phones design as it was very smooth and easy to hold in the hand. In my opinion the phone has been the standout phone of the this century and is perfect for business and personal use as you can have access you push emails and the internet and when you are bored you can play award winning apps such as doodle jump.

This phone is perfect for people who do sports as it has a built in ipod and itunes where you can download most songs and listen to them while you exercise.

It's also very easy to use. Everything is so straight forward and I never had to consult the instruction booklet once. A very smart and well designed phone.

great phone but dont buy second hand or the battery wont last the morning

So May last year I was visiting a friend when I realised my phone battery was dead... bummer! Luckily for me Chris was very kind and let me borrow his iphone 3Gs... This is when I decided I wanted one!

I was straight on the phone to Orange the next morning begging to terminate my contract early and get me a new phone. The kind woman must have had a nice breakfast that morning as she very generously obliged and 2 days later it arrived!

First things first (as this is a review) the box was so small I wondered how it all fit in. It was like Mary Poppins handbag as I slowly pulled out the charger, phone, usb cable, instructions and even some stylish headphones!

Left it to charge as told and then fired it up for the first time..

Now I have an Apple Mac and so I am kind of used to the prestige involved with any i-product, but the clarity on the screen was better than anything I have previously seen on a phone. The Touchscreen sensitivity is spot on perfect and menus are very easily navigated.

So I went out to the car, phone in pocket and went to work.

Turned on the bluetooth and set it up with my hands free within seconds, however if needed the speaker is more than loud enough to use in the car, or failing this the headphones are a good choice if you don't have a bluetooth headset.

Now the beauty of the iphone is that once it is all set up it is very easy to update, and to download music and apps. BUT... It takes a while to set up, involves using a PC/MAC to link it with itunes and if you want apps, you will need to register your credit card details. I trust Apple however some may not be so trusting following the whole Sony Playstation Hacking Malarchy earlier on in the year!

Ok, so let us assume that I want a new song for my ipod app (which is included).. Simply click on the ipod icon and search the store for the song you want.. Click buy, type in your password and voila, it is yours as quickly as your internet will download it!

I could sit here saying how amazing the iphone is however it has three MAJOR flaws as far as I am concerned.

Firstly there is the battery life. It will happily last a couple of days on standby, but as soon as you start using it you can watch the percentage drop like a rock.

Secondly there is the durability of the thing. I highly recommend buying a protective case for it, in fact I would go to the extent of saying you would be stupid not to. Drop an old Nokia and it comes apart, you put it back together and then it works again.. Happy days! However drop an iphone and it will be a case of "is your insurance going to cover it!". trust me, wrap it up!

Thirdly it is not equipped with a simple way to bluetooth files to another phone. I believe it is there to help combat music piracy but still a very annoying lack of functionality!

The camera is also not fantastic but it is definately not the worst in the light.. No flash though so no night shots!

I think this is all I need to say about it. I would stay away from second hand handsets due to the probable decrease in battery life being very disheartening, but all in all a good phone..

              Advantages

              Disadvantages

              Fantastic Phone

The Apple IPhone 3GS is a quality phone. It has a wide range of features, including practically unlimited space for phonebook entries and message storage. If you're buying anything above the 2gb phone then you'll have more or less unlimited storage for music/short film files. The phone has a sleek black/white curved design, quite light on your hand and looks good to your ear. There's also thousands upon thousands of applications available from the iPhone store and similar websites. The technology available on this phone is astounding. You're more likely to enjoy the experience of 21st century technology with the iPhone as opposed to any other phone on the market. All in all this phone is perfect for business use, or personal or both! With access to email, the internet via 3G or WiFi, you have it all right in your hand. You can buy songs from the iTunes store to play on your in-built iPod, watch moves with Apple's movie player or you can record your own movies with Apple's in-built cam-corder. A very fun, and, professional phone.

              Advantages

              Disadvantages

One of the best phones of all time

You might say the basic design is ageing - it is, but when said design is years ahead of the competition is that such a bad thing ? I've had this phone since 2009, I have upgraded to the iphone 4 and can honestly say their is little to separate them.

The 'retina' display of '4' is great , as is the HD camera. Quite honestly though the screen quality of the 3GS is nothing to be sniffed at. The app store is legendary and as mentioned in my iphone 4 review, it is easy to blow a lot of money here on apps that are not strictly needed - all the same , its nice to have.

In terms of ease of use, it really is childs play. Apple is often criticised for patronising their customers, but if that means making a phone as pleasant and fun to use as this - patronise away.

It is still possible to buy the 3GS - for a lot cheaper than at launch, you could even say its a 'budget' smartphone compared to come more expensive modern handsets. At time of writing (July 2011). I would hold off till September to see what Apple have in store - if they simply release a Iphone '4GS' or upgraded iphone 4, dive right in here as the 3GS will run IOS5 , their upcoming operating system.

              Advantages

              Disadvantages

the iphone 3gs 32gb is an impressive piece of kit and is only really let down by its vga camera.

the iphone 3gs is a magnificent piece of advanced technology. it truly shows what all the fuss over iphones is about. the huge 32gb memory allows for a huge number of apps, music, video and pictures to be easily accessed whenever wished. there is no need for an ipod as my iphone has replaced it, aswell as adding additional features to it. Although the camera isnt up to the standard of the other accesories offered by the phone it has been corrected on the iphone 4. the touchscreen is fast to respond and large enough to simply put a film on and relax. the quality of picture on the screen is also impressive. the battery life that the iphone 3gs has is enough to last around a day and a half while being used. the iphone, although not the latest piece of technology to come from apple is definitely worth a buy.

              Advantages

              Disadvantages

easy to navigate my way through the phone & a full range of apps in the app store

for a while ihave been wishing to have an iphone & finally igot one ilove the appearance of the iphone because it is simple & easy the fact that it is touch screen is very convenient because on my other phone the buttons sometimes didnt function properly also when you use the iphone & you are not sure what your on there's always a button to take you back to the homepage which is good for the elderly because they dont know that much about technology my mum also likes that my kids always argue about whos going to take my phone because the app store is so fascinating how many games can be downloaded the vast majority of games are good for people from many ages my auntie which is 34 years old is even impressed as much as iwas my old phone constantly a message came up as 'memory full' but ino longer have this problem with the iphone it comes with 32Gb already installed without the need of adding additional memory cards to the phone this is a must buy for anyone who loves thier technology.

                Advantages

                An amazing piece of kit

We brought this phone for my husband to use while he is at work etc. He does use it but I steal it off him most nights to play on the vast amount of apps he has downloaded to it.
The call quality is great, the SMS function is pretty standard, nothing to write home about. The speed that it does things though, is quite something. We are away alot and rely on the newspaper apps, games (for the kids in the car) etc to keep us in touch with the real world. While I have to wait for what seems a lifetime on my phone, my husband will have loaded the news app, read the headlines and have started a game for one on the kids before I find out anything.
The battery life could be longer lasting, but isn't that the case with every phone on the market? It's a small sacrifice for a phone of this spec. Looks sleek, and is so far indestrucible.
