Apple iPhone 4 16 GB
Advantages: Very good camera, high quality and good range of apps
Disadvantages: Average battery life
The iPhone 4 set a new standard in smartphones. It has improved significantly on the previous iPhone 3GS and, in my opinion, is a better choice than any Android phone that is currently in the market.
I think the standout feature has to be the wide selection of high quality apps on the AppStore. There are apps to do just about anything and everything that you could want to do! From eBaying on the go, to using Shazam to find out what that song you are listening to is...it really does blow open the usefulness of the smartphone.
The core features have been improved as well....a 5MP camera delivers stunning photos....I have even compared it to some more recent phones with 8MP cameras and the iPhone delivers the better image! There are also a whole host of apps for effects and to be able to edit photos on the go.
The UI is faster and very fluid. The Retina display is gorgeous and really makes video and images a pleasure to behold.
One of the features that I have been making the most of recently has been the iBooks app that comes as standard. This gives you access to a whole catalogue of electronic books which can be read on the device. I probably read about 3 books all the way through during my adult life before iBooks...and now I can term myself an "eBook-worm"! It is so nice to be in a situation where you have some time to kill and you can just whip your iPhone out and start reading...much easier than carrying actual books about!
The one downside which I keep hearing people re-iterate is the battery life. On average, I charge my iPhone 4 every day. I think this is reasonable though, as I would say I am a "moderate user" of my phone, and it is essentially like a mini-PC, so I expect it to need charging more often than my old N95!
I would certainly recommend that if for some reason you don't like the iPhone 4S or would prefer a cheaper option then this should definitely be the first place to look. It's the Swiss Army Knife of the modern generation....101 things in your pocket that you can't do without!
One thing to note though might be that, if you can stretch to it, you might be better off to go for the 32GB version of this phone..... occasionally I have found myself almost at the limit of my memory...but I guess it depends how much music you intend to carry about (mine is half filled with music).
Summary: The second choice after the iPhone 4S
