Apple iPhone 4 16 GB
Advantages: Fast, efficient, reliable, easy to synchronise.
I am lucky enough to own two iPhones - the 3GS which is my personal phone and the 4 16GB White which is my work phone. I am lucky enough to work for an institute which offers either the HTC Desire or the iPhone 4 as their standard smartphones, personally I think only a numpty would choose a HTC over an iPhone. My previous work phone and the one which this was replacing was the HTC Touch and anyone who has read my review of that will know what an awful phone to use it was.
No such problems with the iPhone 4. What I need from this phone is perfect synchronisation with my work email and calendar, smooth functionality with regards to contacts and an ability to send coherant emails on the move. This phone does all of the above and so much more so very well indeed.
The iPhone in both guises (3GS and 4) is intuitive, incredibly easy to use and fast. The 4 is marginally faster than the 3GS when it comes to switching between windows or apps, or browsing the internet but the difference is not so much. The 4 has a MUCH better camera and it also has a flash which brings it much more up to speed with other smartphone offerings on the market. The camera is 5MP and has 5x optical zoom, it also has a secondary camera on the front which you can switch to and which enables video calling or facetime.
The cost of this phone (bought via a business though) was £429 plus then a 24 month contract with our service provider (Orange). Don't get me wrong, this is a very expensive phone. It was also bought prior to the launch of the 4S so it may have come down some since then - if you are a new customer you can sometimes find this handset free or with a notional £99 charge but if you want it as an upgrade you will normally have to pay (at least thats what I can see from doing research ahead of my contract being up on my personal phone).
So - it is not a cheap phone. I do not think iPhones ever will be to be honest - but from a business point of view it makes my job completely easy when I am away from the office, it enables me to work seamlessly with my diary and contacts and emails, it never fails in this respect and therefore it is a very suitable and fit for purpose business tool.
Battery life on this phone seems less robust than on my 3GS but it is quicker and smoother on the internet so I assume the processing abilities demand more juice. The battery life is not hugely different but I generally have to charge it most days and keep an eye on it. To be fair though it does get hammered more than my personal phone because my job means I am out on the road a lot.
The iPhone 4 is more angular than the 3GS, it does not have the curved back (which I prefer) and is straight edged. Where the white version of the 3GS is actually black on the face plate, the 4 is white all over.
There have been documented problems with the placing of the antenna on the 4 and I am aware of colleagues who have this phone finding it would cut out if you accidentally covered it with your fingers whilst holding the phone. Personally I have only had this happen once with this phone (but then that is one more time than has ever happened with the 3GS).
I run IOS5 on this phone and this means that I can use the iCloud capabilities across the 3 apple devices I own. IOS5 is impressive and as an operating system I find it reliable and easy to use.
As a business phone I really cannot complain at all about the iPhone 4 - I do not store music on my work phone but this does have a 16GB storage capacity so if I wanted to store things on it I could. On my work phone this is more likely to be notes and documents. Reliable, easy to synchronise and a vital part of my working life, I would always try to stay with an iPhone for work based on my experiences with this phone.
Summary: A highly rated and functional business tool.
