Apple iPhone 4 32 GB
Advantages: Apple support, broad range of products and services, excellent device.
Iv'e decided to review the Iphone 4, although I chiefly stick to game and game console reviews, something reminded me that iv'e been playing games on Iphone's since they came out. I find the Iphone to be a capable gaming platform, with it's own rather comprehensive APP store and Apples undefeatable support Network, Iphone is proving itself to be a truly worthy franchise and still remains on top of a market burgeoning with imposters. Blasting competition out the water and generally providing excellent products and services. But I could sit here all day and twitter about apps and games but i'm going to take a serious look at the Iphone 4.
Let's start with a little out of the box section. The new design is quite minimalist, the curved backs of the previous models have given way to the flat design, I personally feel the Iphone has benefited from this, for starters it's easier to set down! And it doubles up as a coaster (DON'T). The plain black design is broken up by the stainless steel sides and sports altogether chunkier buttons, personally i like them, although some people prefer the sleeker buttons on the other models I actually like the fact that the buttons are more raised and easier to press in my opinion. Only problem would be the silent switch, the new design is better but it still gets caught when you put the phone in your pocket, my sound advice is to check and double check your phone is on silent if your about to head into a meeting!
The Phone has retained the classic front look of the previous models, big shiny home button glaring out at you in the bottom center, and is now sporting a toughened glass screen said to be made of some space age fiber. Now listen to me, toughened glass doesn't mean that Batman would keep one in his utility belt, if you drop it, it may break, the toughened glass is no substitute for a good hard case, and you should get one ASAP if your buying this phone, you may be well defended against scratches and nicks, but i don't care how many men in white coats drop the phone to show us how tough it is, you don't want to end up in the broken phone demographic.
Overall a very striking design, and surprisingly is actually slimmer than the previous models, although it's shape doesn't give that away, it's design makes it look thicker and more industrial, but that in itself is a thing of beauty, and remains one of the thinnest smartphones on the market today.
The Iphone as a Phone.
A quick note on the aerial, part of the stainless steel rim on the outside of the phone acts as the aerial for the phone itself. There has been some connectivity issues with the Iphone 4, it doesn't always pick up reception properly and the problems never really had a fix. The initial rumour was that holding the phone a certain way caused it to loose connectivity, so everyone was sent those rubber cases for it, but that rumour was debunked and we never heard much back from them regarding it, in fact, lately we've had "will be fixed with the iphone 5 which will have no aerial issues", if that really did come from apple it seems a bit cheap. In my own experience I have had the dropped calls and the bad reception, but it hasn't been terrible, but still, as a device that's being touted as a "phone" there shouldn't really have been a problem there.
Therefore the real test for the "phone" side of things would be the call quality, the Iphone has some good sound filtering, which initially claimed to block out the noise of traffic and the general riff raff of the outside world, my guess is that it works very well but i don't have a lot to compare it to. The general sound quality of the phone is good also, as with the previous model the speakers will play music and these speakers are considerably louder and clearer but there still only really good for listening to music privately or showing your mates a video on Youtube. One thing i thought the speakers where great at where the loudspeaker on the phone, iv'e been able to pop the phone down on the arm of the sofa and chat as normal (maybe a tad louder), whilst the poor mug on the other end of the phone has to actually "hold" the phone to there face! Ha, the troglodytes!
Video calls are considerably better too, the front camera picks up fairly quickly and now that face time comes at no additional cost for most contracts perhaps i'll find more use for it, but for the time being I rarely use it so I can't really elaborate too much.
The WiFi connectivity is pretty easy, if you have home wireless just pop the username and password in and off you go, most contracts allow you access to the 3G and Edge networks as well, the Iphone as an internet enabled phone i have found to be nothing short of excellent, Edge and 3G work flawlessly in most areas and being hooked up to WiFi offers service not much unlike your home computer.
A quick note on the battery life, they've solved that problem, it's so unbelievably much better than the 3G and earlier models. Hard use gets about a day, and mild usage about two to three days (but that is really mild!).
My little tip would be when you get your shiny new Iphone 4 make sure all your cables and charger wires are new or at least in a good state, bad wires can cause a bit of overheating on the device and we don't want that!
Screen resolution and camera.
The HD looks stunning, watching Cats on YouTube has never been so good, if you want the best out of YouTubes resolution you'll need to be hooked up to WiFi though, the resolution will adjust depending on what connection you have to reduce the streaming times. However watching HD movies and TV shows you've downloaded to the Hard Drive look amazing, it's better than the resolution on some Televisions and computer monitors and should be applauded. The only real problem is glare from the sun and bright lighting, but the auto brightness seems to sort it out so keep it switched on when your out and about, plus i don't know anyone who wants to duke it out with the sun over a little screen resolution.
The camera quality is vastly superior over the previous models, but it's not superb, there's a lot of showcasing of peoples amazing photos that they've taken with the Iphones camera but bear in mind that these people are usually professional photographers and can take a good photo with a disposable camera if they try hard enough. The addtion of a flash comes in incredibly handy, also there are a number of apps to add filters and edit photos, so if there are any budding photographers you are catered for here. I do think however that the camera is good enough that i wouldn't bother taking an additional digital camera on a family outing or perhaps even a holiday, partly because you also get the video function on the 4G and again there a number of apps to provide you with good user friendly video editing software.
Functionality and the Iphone as a gaming Platform.
I won't harp on about how good swipe technology is, we all know about by now, it's innovative and it's satisfying to use. one tidbit I will release is that Apple recently won the copyright for swipe tech, i'm sure it's all very boring and business oriented but perhaps they've got something else planned with it for the future?
My experience with the swipe technology has been favourable and I don't recall anyone having any real problems getting the hang of it. I suppose using the touch keyboard is something of a learning curve but once you've got that down even fumbling fingers like mine can navigate the keys with relative ease.
With the Itunes store being available on the device itself, and our burgeoning music collections bursting at the seams, i'd say that the reasonably large 32GB hardrive is worth looking into when choosing which Iphone you want, you'll be surprised how fast you can fill this baby up! The extra money you dish out for the extra storage soon becomes well worth it. And one thing you should remember with the Ipod, the sound quality is only as good as the headphones you use. The sound the Iphone gives is flawless, but it's for nought if you use the headphones that have been sat in the draw for a year... you know the ones with the wires hanging out and the foam earpads missing!
So we arrive comfortably in the gaming section of this review. Pop to Appstore and you'll be amazed at the broad range of game titles and the variety available. In among'st the physics puzzlers and Angry birds, there's also a big variety of educational games and language games, so if your just plain wasting time or educating yourself, your being catered for by the App store. Where the Iphone really shines for Apps and Gaming is the fact that it kind of harks back to the days when computer games came on cassette and people started making there own basic computer games for the market. Now, in the days of PS3 and Xbox, even bedroom developers once again have the chance to get there face out there and compete in the huge open market of gaming, and so far they've shown some real skill and come up with some original and entertaining games. This of course has worked no end to Apple's profits.
Overall Apple and the Iphone in general are market leaders for a reason, they remain at the forefront of current technology and Apples support for it's customers has been nothing short of unbeatable.
If your choosing a smartphone I would seriously take an Iphone into consideration.
Summary: your new favourite smartphone!
